School Opening Predictions for Tuesday?

That's not the issue. People seem to think they'll freeze to death in 8F weather. Apparently forgetting all the kids that play in that weather.

Or, more likely, teachers wanted to sleep in.

Is there chance for a change?

Just asking so I can get your opinions and plan accordingly.

These decisions are in line with previous superintendent’s. The difference is that Taylor isn’t waiting until the last minute to announce decisions. He’s providing ample notice and attempting to give more insight into the decision making process. I completely understand why people question some of the decisions, but I’m pleased with his communication.

It's pure propaganda. What the school looked like at 9:30AM this morning isn't relevant. He's counting on people to not call him out.

He’s not submitting a sworn statement to a court of law that the photos depict current conditions; the photos are just supposed to be representative of conditions in different parts of the county before the sun has melted the slush that froze overnight.

He absolutely expects you to interpret those photos as reflecting current conditions. Don't be so naive. The schools are fine to open on time.

We are delayed because of potential refreezing overnight. These pictures were taken in the morning because the morning conditions are what’s relevant. They don’t call for a 2 hour delay because of the conditions at 3 pm.

Have any of you ever seen the bus depots?

Can buses be cleared off and warmed by 5:30am+ if schools open on time in this weather? high school busses start early

Can bus drivers and bus depot staff safely get to MCPS' 13,024 bus stops on time in this weather without having the 2hr delay?

Meanwhile, cafeteria staff need to report on time.

No they do not. Not all students arrive to school like Larlo does in his Lexus car.

Potentially it could change to a full closure, but I don’t think that’s very likely. Have a contingency plan for every possibility, but I think they’ll stick with the 2 hour delay.

I think there is always a change. I would be proceeding as if there was going to be school, and also making back up plans, because MCPS's track record on making the right decision and sticking to it isn't great.

A change in status would be announced by 5am after evaluating conditions - roads, school parking lots, buses

In the past, MCPS has considered a 2 hour delay to mean a 2 hour shift in the deadline to announce. They can, and have in the past, announced as late as 7 a.m..

Yes they have as recent as last January. Right, 7am on a 2hr delay. Will set alarm accordingly.

Don't be a jerk -- teachers had nothing to do with this decision. This is MCPS being risk averse. They always go further than is needed when there is winter weather involved. If it's reasonable to open on time, they will open late. If it's reasonable to open late, they will close for the day. And if it's reasonale to close but let child care centers open, then they will be code red and close everything. Super frustrating but not the fault of teachers. Signed, A parent who is now scrambling for tomorrow.

They will close. What will change?

When did it melt?

It's icy. School will close.
