Democracy Dies in Darkness

The local reporters are mostly really just nothing more than leftwing political activists.

Sure about that? I'm extremely skeptical that Bezos could sell the Post for more than the $338 million in inflation adjusted price of the $250m he paid in 2013. The advertising model has become worse and he's selling digital subscriptions for $25. Kissing Dump's ring won't help subscription sales.

And Kara Swisher and whoever her investors are don’t have pockets deep enough to keep this money losing operation afloat. If you don’t want the Washington Post to continue operations, the best way to do that is to sell it to someone who cannot afford to subsidize its losses.

The Post killed one of Ann Telnaes’s cartoons so she is quitting.

This is bad news. She is an amazing political cartoonist and it’s sad to see the Post continuing to move away from its journalistic mission.

Politics aside, I think most people would expect to be fired if they openly and publicly disrespected their boss. So I’d say the outcome was actually very favorable given the circumstances.

To be fair, in Trumpworld, anyone to the left of Heinrich Himmler is a left wing political activist.

This isn't any random employer. This is a media outlet with particular ethics around conflict of interest and bias. Any WaPo story you read about Amazon will note that Bezos owns WaPo for this reason. You can't do good journalism if you have to maintain deference to the rich people you work for. So they're not anymore.

Jeff Bezos bought himself a newspaper, and that's fine with you. Turns out democracy dies in daylight.

Nah, democracy is doing just fine, and is working as advertised. You just don't like the outcome this time around.

And, I agree with those who note that any employee stupid enough to lampoon her employer deserves what she gets. She could draw cartoons about an infinite number of topics, but choosing specifically to antagonize your employer is just imbecilic. That has nothing to do with the owner buying anything, apart from an expectation of respect from those whose salaries he pays.

It sounds like you belong in that cartoon. You'd be the person sucking up to the billionaires who are sucking up to the convicted felon.

Wow, you really don’t understand what journalism is supposed to be in America.

Sad and depressing situation. People are willingly giving power to billionaires that don’t care about us at all. With friends like these who needs enemies?

You don’t understand journalism or its purpose. Bezos is going to end up owning the print version of X, but he doesn’t care, because he doesn’t care about democracy or journalism or America.
