They’re required to work. They can’t even take leave. If they don’t work, they’re AWOL and can be disciplined.

Right all leave is cancelled. If you get sick, you get furloughed and don’t return until shutdown ends. Now that they are guaranteed pay, I guess Feds could get “sick” and furlough themselves. I almost had to do that because of scheduled surgery.

This has to be fixed in the eventual settlement. One of the things that should give a shutdown a real bite is being able to save money for each day of shutdown while hammering the administrative state and its worker bees. Guaranteeing back pay ruins this. Biden and Schumer are pretty feeble, so the House Republicans should hold out until that legislation gifting shutdown back pay is eliminated or at least substantially reduced.

This would be an excellent way to anger an entire workforce of hundreds of thousands of people, but I guess that’s an accomplishment to Republicans?

Actually millions of people. And the sickouts, work slowdowns, etc would be epic.

I agree with every word of this and have been saying it for months.

I don't understand why McCarthy just doesn't trigger the vote-of-confidence and stare down Gaetz, MTG, et al. He will win the vote and rid himself of these pests.

He has 4 votes to spare. 1 of whome is dying of cancer. One of whom just underwent major surgery. And one of whom just gave firth. So, 1 vote. And Matt Gaetz is spearheading the shutdown to out Florida DeSantis and become Governor. He and MTG are all it takes to shut us down. And keep us shutdown.

Scared yet?

McCarthy will lose. Remember, it took 15 rounds of voting to get him there in the first place.

15 separate votes the first time. That’s why. If the Dems would just vote for him as Speaker and pass McCarthy’s compromise bill from his caucus all this would be over.

But that was then and this is now. He should have a stable of loyalists by now who can whip the votes. The rest of the GOP delegation is exhausted from being held hostage by 20 psychopaths.

Except it only takes 2 psychopaths. And Gaetz, MTG, Boebert, and Gohmert are, in fact, psychopathic. That’s how narrow the majority is.

Federal pay is in the low single digits of our total budget, so it won’t save much. I think people forget that the average federal employee is a GS-11 in middle America who processes some type of benefit, they have done nothing to cause the chaos in washington and shouldn’t lose pay every few years when our politicians fail to do their jobs.

Gov employees should get a paycheck during shutdowns and not have to wait until it reopens.

Is this for sure happening?

It's not even worth thinking about until next week.

He can only lose four votes. Four. Why? Because hyper-partisan DemocRATs refuse to accept that he’s the only option.

Sorry no you can hang this on the Dems. Your party has the crazy people. Your majority leader should have better control. Pelosi never had this problem!

Can you imagine what would happen if a Speaker who was female were having these issues? She would be crucified for this level of incompetence. The headlines alone, gosh.

I agree. I’m lucky, I have access to interest free debt and savings. The cost of shutdowns to families with less than ours is horrible.

Paying feds to do nothing should be the incentive to reopen.

That’s not true. I’ve already had to move several deadlines to make sure things are in a position to stop on Oct. 1

No. Not for sure. However, I'm about 75% confident that it is happening. I'm in the budget world and taking contingency planning for more seriously than a normal year.

Getting paid isn't an automatic thing. There are time keepers, payroll people and budget people processing pay. And those people are furloughed too.

Pelosi was a much better leader than Kevin- and I am a former Republican.

They should be deemed essential and be paid overtime for their work.

Do some agencies stay "open" and keep paying during shutdowns? I could swear my old neighbor worked through and was even paid on time during the last shutdown- but I can't remember what agency it was now (it was a smaller one I think).
