As a Jew, I’m terrified

Anonymous
As Jews, we are always terrified of one thing or another. It is congenital.

I don’t think all minority groups use the same levels of what they consider “unsafe”. Latinos are probably the ones with the thickest skin.

I am not Jewish, but I have many Jewish friends. Not a single one of them feels scared. Where do you live, OP? Maybe my friends and I live in a bubble, I don't know. None of them has felt anti-semitism personally, at least not that I know about. I have some Jewish ancestors, but I'm not Jewish. I can't begin to understand anti-semitism. It seems like a made-up thing by the Trump exterminators to use to crush immigrants. I hope you feel better OP. I don't think you're in danger.

DP.

Completely different experience. My Jewish friends are concerned about attending synagogue or other Jewish community events and are reluctant to wear anything that identifies them as Jewish.

Many, perhaps most, tell me that they have experienced overt and unambiguous antisemitism at some point in their lives.

Imagine the families like mine, half Jewish half Catholic. Fear and guilt go hand in hand

All I can tell you is that when I see jews posting on Facebook about antisemitism I immediately think wouldn't it be better to spend more time reigning in your own culture? I know some jews are speaking out against Israel but most of them aren't. They feel no responsibility or even applaud Israel while also fearing for retaliation. As the saying goes FAFO.

You know what, if you don't know anything, you should sit this one out.

Something tells me that you will be fine. Imagine being a Muslim in these United States right now. Now that group will face even more Islamophobia and harassment. It’s not all about you OP.

+1. This was my first thought when I read OP. It’s not all about you and you have the ability to make that clear by articulating you don’t support this. If more American Jews did this, it would impact the conversation.

But Muslims don’t have that luxury.

So in a thread supposedly by a jewish American expressing their concern for rising antiSemitism (yeah, I know you think it's just antiZionism)...we are now supposed to blame the Jew for antisemitism and shift our concern for just Muslims. All groups deserve to be treated with respect, that goes without saying. But this thread right here, is why Israel exists.

Oh, how amusing and ironic that your last two sentences contradict each other.

We don’t worry because we don’t belong to any synagogues or go to demonstrations. But there hasn’t been anything major in terms of people getting killed. You should worry more about Israelis and Palestinians. They are in real danger.

DP

Sure.

But Iran has been funding terror groups in multiple regions for quite some time. There are consequences for such things.

And now that the US has been dragged into it, it’s reasonable to worry about America and Americans—whether on American soil or abroad.

I wonder how Trump will navigate this…

While he’s big on retribution, he and his advisors probably didn’t see this coming.

Who????!!!! THAT is the problem there are none. Really.

Your friends should stop fretting and go do communal events, and get on with their lives. If Jews never attended synagogue throughout history because there were some people out there who didn’t like us, we’d have disappeared thousands of years ago.

Jeff is not Jewish so I’m confused as to why Jeff would be telling OP how to feel?

I didn’t say Jeff was telling OP “how to feel.” I think the post puts current events in a context that we would all be well served to consider.

how do current events put in context mean that OP shouldn’t worry about antisemitism? And why do you have the right to tell them that? Would you tell anyone else something like that?

Facts should tell the OP not to worry. I’m not saying anyone in a Synagogue, Mosque or Church is safe. Based on our history all have been targeted. But the average Jew living his life shouldn’t be worried.

You need to know how to read the room. Nowhere is 100% perfectly safe for everyone at all times but the US is safer than many. I, as a woman, am cautious to travel to the inner city alone at night sadly just because I am a woman. A black person may not be safe in an all white Christian southern town.

So what’s the room saying? I’m not afraid to travel to the city alone at night. Why wouldn’t a Black person be safe in an all white Southern town? It might suck being there but nothing to worry about. Stop with the fear mongering.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was forced to issue an apology recently after a benign tweet expressing concern for the victims and families of the recent war initiated against Iran, and indicating that they are working with partner agencies to monitor the situation locally to ensure the safety of the residents served by their department.

Los Angeles happens to be home to the largest population of Iranian emigres in the U.S., so the tweet made sense from a community awareness perspective. As a point of reference, the same agency has also tweeted (dozens of times over the past two years) expressing similar thoughts and concerns regarding the area’s Jewish community.

But of course … of course … of course … the AIPAC / ADL / Betar / Canary Mission / Laura Loomer / Ben Shapiro / Mark Levin / corrupted members of Congress dream team immediately sprung into action to demand a retraction and apology, with critics focused on the post’s insensitivity to Israel’s interests.

Ultimately, I fail to see how peace is achievable when the interests of one small group continue to be forced center stage at every juncture. And as long as that lack of peace continues, unfortunately, I suspect that individuals like the OP will likely continue to experience some level of fear - through no fault of their own. And that sucks.

In a nutshell that means that antisemitism doesn’t exist?

That means a lot of the antisemitism incidents reported are not antisemitism Like any minority group you have to be careful that what you’re accusing is legit to keep your credibility.

Please name an antisemitism event recently that was faked. the two people shot in DC? The Colorado fire bombing? tree of life? The innumerable smaller incidents of slurs and swastikas?

They may be safe in these environments but the risk of being targeted increases. A woman considering walking alone in the inner city after dark should maybe think twice. Same as any brown skinned minority considering moving to an all white town anywhere. Sadly this is just reality. This applies to jews as well, if you’re wearing a kippa or a Star of David, walking through a muslim neighborhood may elicit a negative response. Unfortunately there are going to be extremists who target churches, temples, schools, etc. these are usually mentally ill individuals and are few and far between.

I think the PP is referring to the fact that any criticism of the Israeli government and their actions in Gaza is labeled antisemitic. That our own government is using this kind of rhetoric to justify dismantling universities and undermine science. These types of things are dangerous and undermine efforts to address real antisemitism such as the incidents you describe.
