As a Jew, I’m terrified

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was forced to issue an apology recently after a benign tweet expressing concern for the victims and families of the recent war initiated against Iran, and indicating that they are working with partner agencies to monitor the situation locally to ensure the safety of the residents served by their department.

Los Angeles happens to be home to the largest population of Iranian emigres in the U.S., so the tweet made sense from a community awareness perspective. As a point of reference, the same agency has also tweeted (dozens of times over the past two years) expressing similar thoughts and concerns regarding the area’s Jewish community.

But of course … of course … of course … the AIPAC / ADL / Betar / Canary Mission / Laura Loomer / Ben Shapiro / Mark Levin / corrupted members of Congress dream team immediately sprung into action to demand a retraction and apology, with critics focused on the post’s insensitivity to Israel’s interests.

Ultimately, I fail to see how peace is achievable when the interests of one small group continue to be forced center stage at every juncture. And as long as that lack of peace continues, unfortunately, I suspect that individuals like the OP will likely continue to experience some level of fear - through no fault of their own. And that sucks.

In a nutshell that means that antisemitism doesn’t exist?

That means a lot of the antisemitism incidents reported are not antisemitism Like any minority group you have to be careful that what you’re accusing is legit to keep your credibility.

Please name an antisemitism event recently that was faked. the two people shot in DC? The Colorado fire bombing? tree of life? The innumerable smaller incidents of slurs and swastikas?

I think the PP is referring to the fact that any criticism of the Israeli government and their actions in Gaza is labeled antisemitic. That our own government is using this kind of rhetoric to justify dismantling universities and undermine science. These types of things are dangerous and undermine efforts to address real antisemitism such as the incidents you describe.

Despite what the ADL says, calling the criticism of Israel anti-Semitic is very problematic. Because it essentially means that Judaism condones genocide and ethnic cleansing.

DP. Israel is at total war with Muslims and Palestinians. Israel kills, rapes and terrorizes women and children because they are easy targets. It is beyond reason to think these people will not commit the same type of war crimes Israel has committed including going after Jews(and now US citizens) anywhere in the world. Israel says everything it does is in the name of Jews people.

It is a never ending war. If you walk over and kill Jane her family will hate you. You can not claim you are the victim or they hate you because you are Jews. That is not antisemitism. They hate you because you murdered there loved one.

This is more like hating the stranger across an ocean who happens to be the same religion as the person who killed someone the same religion as you. I can’t believe you think it’s a valid justification.

+1 this is the definition of a hate crime. PP hates people because of their religion. And sadly it is accepted in many White progressive circles. My Muslim-American family members don't think like this. They actually feel an affinity with Jewish people. They also feel deeply the violence in Gaza, are furious about it and donate constantly to humanitarian charities that are trying to help. Somehow they manage not to blame all Jews for it because they are not idiots. It's privileged White Americans who have convinced themselves their hatred of Jews in any way helps the Palestinian people.

If antisemitism turns out to be universal - i.e. if antisemitism is built into humanity - then what do we do?

Has anyone searched for the antisemitic gene-sequence in our DNA?

Antisemitism is no different than any other form of discrimination.

Those are the obvious ones. The ADL reported almost 10,000 incidents in 2024. Are they mostly slurs and swastikas? Are they physical violence? It’s not clear.

Swastikas are never acceptable. They happen in boys middle school bathrooms because they aren’t teaching modern history early enough. Every single ethnic group is subject to hateful slurs. But these complaints aren’t new and are the least harmful and most common.

AMERICAN jewish ES students are slandering each other calling nonjewish children antisemitic and the parents are defending the bigoted behavior. This is disgusting. I am sorry but this is a hate crime as well. Perhaps all ES should have a mandatory Jewish cultural course so nonjews learn at a young age what is permitted or prohibited to say to jewish children.

Definitely neither (a) saying whatever the non-Jewish kids said or (b) calling them antisemitic is a hate crime. You can say whatever you want about Jews. Just don’t shoot us.

Ok but let’s not minimize slurs against anyone.

+1 there is a lot of anti-blackism around the world, too. Hate is awful, no matter the creed or color.

Also the more focus and attention that is drawn to people’s differences the more people will focus on those differences. Can we try to find common ground, focus on similarities as well? The schools preach diversity and acceptance but really only focus on how we are all so different. This is doing a disservice.

Based on the values demonstrated in your stated views, I hope you don’t experience anything along the lines of what you fear because you don’t seem like part of the problem.

So Jews that support Israel deserve what, to be subjected to attacks here in the US?

DP they should at minimum be drafted in to the front line US units.

Only Jews, or also Christians who support Israel and support bombing Iran?

DP. I’m just glad that for now, it’s an all volunteer military. I pray it remains that way for my kids sake. Those who want to fight for the man with the billions, have at it. Just do enough job to keep that greedy, bullshat outside the continuous United States.

If you think our military is made up of true volunteers, and not folks manipulated through the economics of poverty, you're naive. Your children aren't being used for cannon fodder because they are most likely white and financially privileged. Try not to be so glib about the people who weren't so lucky, had to make different choices to say, pay for college, and who will now put their lives on the line for a bunch of old men playing at war.

+1000. My son's ex girl-friend, who I have come to care for deeply, had just signed up for a branch of the military because she had no other options. This is the reality of most of the people that are being sacrificed for these people who want to play with their lives for their own gain. It's insane.

Did you get lost on the way to an Israel and Iran post? “These people” here in this post are US Jews who mostly didn’t even vote for Trump and have nothing to do with his or Netanyahu’s decisions. We’re just kindly asking for people to not be antisemitic. And btw there are Jews in the US army too.

The idea that people have no agency or choice, especially in an economic environment with extraordinarily low unemployment, is absurd.

Progressives are such a PITA.
