As a Jew, I’m terrified

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was forced to issue an apology recently after a benign tweet expressing concern for the victims and families of the recent war initiated against Iran, and indicating that they are working with partner agencies to monitor the situation locally to ensure the safety of the residents served by their department.

Los Angeles happens to be home to the largest population of Iranian emigres in the U.S., so the tweet made sense from a community awareness perspective. As a point of reference, the same agency has also tweeted (dozens of times over the past two years) expressing similar thoughts and concerns regarding the area’s Jewish community.

But of course … of course … of course … the AIPAC / ADL / Betar / Canary Mission / Laura Loomer / Ben Shapiro / Mark Levin / corrupted members of Congress dream team immediately sprung into action to demand a retraction and apology, with critics focused on the post’s insensitivity to Israel’s interests.

Ultimately, I fail to see how peace is achievable when the interests of one small group continue to be forced center stage at every juncture. And as long as that lack of peace continues, unfortunately, I suspect that individuals like the OP will likely continue to experience some level of fear - through no fault of their own. And that sucks.

In a nutshell that means that antisemitism doesn’t exist?

That means a lot of the antisemitism incidents reported are not antisemitism Like any minority group you have to be careful that what you’re accusing is legit to keep your credibility.

Please name an antisemitism event recently that was faked. the two people shot in DC? The Colorado fire bombing? tree of life? The innumerable smaller incidents of slurs and swastikas?

These are extremists committing these acts, likely mentally ill individuals. These happened and are very real events but few and far between. Tree of Life happened what 7 years ago? Not to minimize these tragedies but think of all the hate crimes against other minorities that are never even reported. Do you think a minority who can’t speak English is likely to report being a victim of a hate crime? How about a mentally challenged black person, will they recognize and report being a victim of a hate crime?

The point is to acknowledge antisemitism, not to compare it or minimize it or say other forms of hatred are any less wrong. So why even go there? Nobody said those other crimes didn’t matter or matter less. In fact, if anyone brought up antisemitism in a thread about a different hate crime, it would absolutely be wrong. Why can you not focus on antisemitism in one thread?

I am not Jewish, but I have many Jewish friends. Not a single one of them feels scared. Where do you live, OP? Maybe my friends and I live in a bubble, I don't know. None of them has felt anti-semitism personally, at least not that I know about. I have some Jewish ancestors, but I'm not Jewish. I can't begin to understand anti-semitism. It seems like a made-up thing by the Trump exterminators to use to crush immigrants. I hope you feel better OP. I don't think you're in danger.

DP.

Completely different experience. My Jewish friends are concerned about attending synagogue or other Jewish community events and are reluctant to wear anything that identifies them as Jewish.

Many, perhaps most, tell me that they have experienced overt and unambiguous antisemitism at some point in their lives.

Your friends should stop fretting and go do communal events, and get on with their lives. If Jews never attended synagogue throughout history because there were some people out there who didn’t like us, we’d have disappeared thousands of years ago.

We have to accept that nowhere is 100% safe at all times. We need to use discretion, read the room and try our best to protect ourselves against targeted crimes. Anyone can be a victim of a ‘hate crime’. Extremists will always extreme, but luckily the US is a law abiding country for the most part.

Yes antisemitism exists. But it will always exist like all forms of discrimination and racism.

I also think when young children are being branded as antisemites we may be taking this a bit too far.

DP. Israel is at total war with Muslims and Palestinians. Israel kills, rapes and terrorizes women and children because they are easy targets. It is beyond reason to think these people will not commit the same type of war crimes Israel has committed including going after Jews(and now US citizens) anywhere in the world. Israel says everything it does is in the name of Jews people.

It is a never ending war. If you walk over and kill Jane her family will hate you. You can not claim you are the victim or they hate you because you are Jews. That is not antisemitism. They hate you because you murdered there loved one.

This is more like hating the stranger across an ocean who happens to be the same religion as the person who killed someone the same religion as you. I can’t believe you think it’s a valid justification.

Mass shooters will always target schools, churches, temples, malls, any crowded space. These are mentally ill individuals with guns. Also remember sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. I think we all need to grow a thicker skin.

Can slander and destroying reputations also be considered a hate crime?

AMERICAN jewish ES students are slandering each other calling nonjewish children antisemitic and the parents are defending the bigoted behavior. This is disgusting. I am sorry but this is a hate crime as well. Perhaps all ES should have a mandatory Jewish cultural course so nonjews learn at a young age what is permitted or prohibited to say to jewish children.

NP. I’m also half Jewish/half Catholic. Luckily my Catholic side wins out and my anxiety is nil. Guilt on the other hand..

"Yes, antisemitism exists."

If antisemitism turns out to be universal - i.e. if antisemitism is built into humanity - then what do we do?

Has anyone searched for the antisemitic gene-sequence in our DNA?

The shooter in D.C. was not Muslim, and the attacker in Colorado was from a country that has had a successful peace treaty with Israel for more than four decades. And at any rate, American Jews are not committing war crimes. If these people wanted to fly to Israel and commit similar acts there, your analogy would hold up better.
