Meh, just sounds like bitter mom upset about dropping off her kids at the forthcoming Kent Gardens bubble all winter.

Is there really going to be a KG bubble? That would be awesome! Regardless about how you feel about the move, that would be win-win. We need more winter locations around here. I also want McLean S&T to bubble.

Not the PP, but someone mentioned Mach exploring several options/sites in the McLean/falls church area including use of bubbles. Should know in the next 2-3 months what’ll happen.

Besides Tuckahoe and Chesterbrook, how many pools have heaters to run in the winter? I heard Overlee was moving that direction as well. And does Chesterbrook even use it anymore?

DR is heated. As a lap swimmer myself I’d love to see them bubble it for the winter.

Poplar heights is also heated. But a certain contingency fought hard against a tennis bubble a few years ago so I doubt they could pull off a pool bubble.

Agreed lots of opportunities for these associations to rent out space and add to their balance sheet

You must not know the costs associated with running a bubble in the winter. It’s not some slam dunk cash cow, it’s high risk, a lot of work, for not a ton of gain.

Do you know from experience? What are the risks and work involved? Genuinely asking. If a club can pony up a $100k or more, and members can use the pool in the winter, that seems to be a nice subsidy and benefit to neighborhoods. I would think staffing would be the top concern beyond equipment/infrastructure.

I looked into a bubble about 5 years ago. Bubbles have to fit your pool and clubhouse shape and it will not work on every pool lot. The cost back then was in the 300,000 to 500,000 range just for the structure. I’m sure there has been big inflation. Then you consider set up keeping the air pumping all winter and heating the pool. I am not sure it is economically viable most places.

“I’m sure there has been big inflation.” - I see what you did there.

DP. The bubble has to provide safe egress that comply with local regulations, and often a bubble is an issue if it blocks egress from an adjacent building. You will need an airlock as opposed to a revolving door for ada regulations. Also, depending on the setup of the pipes, the deck might require heating, which is expensive. And finally, the air temp inside the bubble should be within a few degrees of the water temp. Heating the water and the air requires a lot of energy. It will cost several thousand a month to run a bubble, not to mention the cost of the bubble. I have seen sports clubs and community centers with bubbles, but none of the private clubs around me have bubbles. I’m guessing the economics do not work out for them.

Also the bathrooms have to be able to be used in the winter. And unfortunately the bathroom work would need to be done almost immediately so as to not interfere with the pool summer season. Realistically I think they might get a pool to Agree to stay open with heaters as long as it isn’t to cold outside. Like what ncap did with dominion hills when Marymount wouldn’t let them use pool in Covid.
