It would be nice if people could view comments more constructively rather than constantly making unfounded accusations when the poster’s opinion differs from their own.

Is it unfounded that Tuckahoe members pay less in fees at Hydra than everyone else?

The negativity focused on this particular team certainly isn't unfounded. Clubs offer discounts for all sorts of reasons that aren't available to everyone (returning swimmers, siblings, etc). If Hydra chose to give the hosting pool a slight discount on the registration fee for its members as part of its bid to secure space at that location, that seems like good business. Another weird one to focus on. Some folks are just looking for a reason to be angry.

I’m not angry but I’m also not willing to pay more for the same product. No other Club offers a discount to some kids and not to others.

NP. Are there reduced fees, or do nonmembers pay a facility usage fee that members do not?

And I wonder what the members who don’t have kids involved in swimming think of this? We once left a club (different country) because it was overrun with so many kids from sports programs that were renting space. It was unpleasant to use the locker rooms, etc, because of all the little kids running around. We were also assessed for wear and tear mostly due to team rentals, which didn’t seem fair.

Can’t wait until Hydra posts their meet schedule. Then the best argument against them will be gone.

I hope that’s the case. There is discussion of discontinuing PVS opens so I hope he’s networking with clubs to get into invites. Especially since he can’t host any meets.

I can't believe there's no meet schedule yet and people are still forking over thousands of dollars.

The PVS 2025-2026 tentative calendar is out and there are Opens on there so they at least have those. I am also going to bet that most kids joining right now are younger or, like the PP, older kids who swim in the non competitive group for fun/to stay in shape and don't care about big meets. I can't image older competitive level kids switching without knowing they will be attending the more competitive meets because kids in those groups sure do not want to swim at PVS opens.

Key word: tentative. Opens may go away.

The suggestion was for 2026 to be the pilot for no Opens, so there is no anticipation that the Opens will not be an option during SC season next year.

Fwiw the competition committee is asking that opens be continued. The bod had floated cancelling them for 2026. I think whether or not opens continue will be tied to how willing clubs are to host the opens.

This is an interesting thought. I didbw see that hyrda had several less competitive options. One of the most legit criticisms of this particular coach is that he expects kids to put swimming first Obviously you can’t run a club that way.

When you say “legit criticisms” did you actually talk to him about this philosophy? I have children who swim for him and he has never told us that we should put swimming first. While my kids are 12U they are extremely competitive and he has always been supportive of other sporting activities that they do.

I think it’s great that there are options at Hydra for less competitive plans so that families can choose the best path for their kids. Not all clubs in the area offer this flexibility which is unfortunate.

That is incorrect. I know for a fact that both York and NCAP have a “maintenance” group for older kids who still want to swim but aren’t all in.

I think as they get older yes some places split out the groups based on how competitive you want to be. Personally my daughter has not had this experience. She is extremely competitive and has AAA times as a 10 year old. In her group there are kids who do not take it seriously and end up slowing down the lanes, causing frustration for the kids who have this as their number one sport.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being slower or not focusing only on swimming. I only mention the above because at our team there are not options for competitive and not competitive at a young age. Going to a club that offers that split seems like it would be beneficial to everyone.

I am confused. No opens for Hydra or are you saying PVS will no longer host opens?

This should be a new thread.

There was a proposal to discontinue the PVS Opens during the 2026-2027 season as a test run to see how it would go. Apparently most LSCs do not put on Open meets the way PVS does.

Any good Club is going to have at least 2 levels for their swimmers based on speed at every age group (other than 8 and unders) and any good Club also has kids in lanes based on their ability and has them doing workouts at different intervals. For example at my daughter’s NCAP MU practice there are typically 3 different intervals going for a workout so that everyone is getting the intensity and training that they need. The coach moves kids between the different lanes as well based on what the workout is.

While I haven’t seen these two thoughts linked many of the pools pvs uses are outside pvs jurisdiction and the meets now have to be sanctioned by Virginia swimming. This may also push towards getting rid of opens.

Where are these many PVS open meets held that are outside of PVS?
