What? No. The point is that the students violently rioted and threatened the teacher based on race & religion. I must have missed the similar attacks on Sarandon. And yes, Sarandon’s speech was worse than the teacher’s. |
Sarandon a) was suggesting that Jews did not suffer from anti-semitism before now and b) that she was glad Jews are now scared. |
Palestinian’s certainly do NOT deserve Hamas’s boot, which brought down this destruction on them. |
I don’t agree with A or B, but neither of those are things she said. |
It’s fascinating how people like you just cannot do it - just cannot find it within to feel compassion for others, even when someone reluctantly plays along and paints you into the corner of your own design. You just cannot express an ounce of actual compassion. The best you can do is “Well, maybe they don’t deserve it, but it’s their own fault, so …” |
If you can provide a quote where Sarandon said “Jews have not suffered from anti-semitism before now” or “I’m glad Jews are now scared”, I’ll join your condemnation of her actions without delay. It can be paraphrased, but not the kind of wholesale “pretext and subtext” nonsense I’ve seen here too often. |
She said: “ There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence." This denies that Jews have been subject to antisemitism before today. That’s what it says. And it heavily implies she thinks it is a good thing Jews are learning this lesson of being afraid. |
How very, very far we’ve come from the days of microaggressions, where merely asking “where are you from?” could be an offensive and racist act. |
I have compassion but I 100% think this particular war is the fault of Hamas. Interesting that you think compassion means denying responsibility. |
Personally, I would view that type of statement as “a little tone deaf and kinda insensitive” considering the groups involved and the current climate. I wouldn’t write someone off for that statement alone, until and unless it involved more explicit, inflammatory language. I just don’t find comfort is ascribing specific intent and implications, especially where I don’t see them. However, I’m not Jewish and I don’t have lived experience as a Jew (although contrary to the thought police here, I do have Jewish friends, including several close ones). Given that, I’ll acknowledge that condemnation from those affected by her statement(s) isn’t unreasonable. That’s as far as I can go. But I’ll add that the undergirding of my views never involves viewing all Israelis (and their supporters) as villains and all Palestinians (and their supporters) as saints, or vice versa. This IS a complex problem, but the status quo is no way to solve it. |
+100 It’s clear that the lunatics are running the asylum now. School administrators are spineless cowards who refuse to demand students behave respectfully in any way anymore. Just disgusting. |
DP. Good grief, the pretzel-twisting you’re engaging in is remarkable. Had she said something similar, but insert a group you feel kinship /empathy with (obviously not Jews), you’d be outraged. Face it: she said something offensive and off-base and the PP who explained exactly why it was offensive and off-base is correct. Sarandon is an absolute idiot. |
There are a lot of people afraid of being American at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Russian in this country, so often subjected to violence. Yeah, nope. Nothing approaching outrage - at all. In fact, nothing. Completely benign statement. You’re a clown. Identifying yourself as DP literally matters not because you just follow the company line anyway. Censorship, shouting down anyone questioning the actions of the State of Israel as anti-Semitic, rinse and repeat. Again, you’re a clown. |
I agree fully. Let's send a riot to Sarandon's house and trap her inside for a few hours. |
Don’t forget to fire the teacher, do everything you can think of to blackball her from teaching or finding gainful employment ever again, and - and this is the important part - don’t forget to interpret her actions however you want - remember, it doesn’t matter how she feels, it only matters how you feel after twisting and distorting her words and actions to suit your needs! |
