I went to high school with the younger brother who was killed in the Bethesda pipe bomb explosion in 1989. He was a nice kid and we were on vacation in Colorado when it happened- it was national news. It is believed they were making it to blow up mailboxes.

DH's friend had too much to drink at a bar one night when they were in grad school. He said he wanted to walk to clear his head and would just leave his car and come get it the next day (he lived a 10 minute walk way). He made arrangements to meet DH and their other friend the next morning for their study group and then left the bar. On the walk home, a drunk driver swerved onto the sidewalk and ran him over, killing him.

0. IT guy from a job many years ago. Wonderful fellow. He retired on a Friday, and we had a party for him. When we came back to work on Monday, we learned that he died on Saturday. Apparently, he was in his backyard tackling some projects, one of which was removing a diseased tree. He cut it down, and it fell on him.
1. A colleague from work brought his date back to his apartment. They were hanging out on his roof deck, and there was a rooftop party happening several buildings away. They both had some drinks in them, and decided to get to the party by making their way across the roofs of the buildings in between. There was an alley between two of the buildings. He jumped across the gap successfully. His date tried to jump across, and fell five stories to her death. |

I'm from a farm, and we had two neighbors die in accidents, both found by their wives when they didn't come in for dinner (as in noon meal).
One was a dairy farmer who was grinding feed for his cows. The grinder is powered by a PTO (rotating shaft) at the back of a tractor. His shirt caught in the PTO which spun his arm up and hit himself in the head with enough force to break his neck. The other was under his pickup truck working on it when the engine fell on his chest. Another neighbor survived, but lost one arm and part of his shoulder in a hay baling accident--arm got caught in the baler when he was trying to get something unstuck. He had the presence of mind to stick his boot in the part of the baler that was pulling in his arm or he would have died right there. Neighbors heard him screaming. Horrifying one I read about was a doctor in Texas who was decapitated when the winter scarf he was wearing got caught in hospital elevator doors, and he was not inside the elevator. |

Several years ago, lived in a neighborhood that was separated from an industrialized area by a main road, and there was a sand and gravel operation in that area. One day, either late spring or early fall, heard sirens. An 8 year old and ridden his bike up on top the gravel pile while they were pulling gravel from the bottom using some kind of conveyor or auger type equipment, and the kid got sucked in.
My brother went camping with some buddies when they were in their 20s. While drinking beer around the campfire one of them mused about how cool it would be to sleep in a canoe overnight. They had a few canoes with them. Next morning the guy was gone--he had tried it, canoe drifted downstream (wasn't tied, they just beached the canoes) and it overturned, his body was found a day later. |
