And I feel horrible for the Toyota driver, who was probably thinking if I just hadn’t taken the left turn… Poor guy.

For sure. He's thinking... if only I had left home 2 min. earlier... or 2 min. later, these two girls would be alive today.

so now is his fault?

He turned into the path of an oncoming car - a car with the right away.

BMW lost right of way by speeding. It's in the virginia code posted upthread.

Absolutely. Likely 2 charges of vehicular manslaughter, charge of reckless driving, speeding, and operating in an unsafe manner. Perhaps 15-20 years incarcerated.

I highly doubt that re: jail time. I'd expect a year or two at most, plus community service, and some period of probation. I wouldn't be surprised if he only had a few months of jail or home confinement. BMW driver will be portrayed as having a bright future, and that it was a tragedy all around, good kid, very sorry, etc, etc, ...family pays a lot in lawyer fees and some payment to girls' families. And he'll go on to college a lityle later.

You are dreaming if you think he'll get 15+years.

You sound like their family attorney. Are they that wealthy?

If they can afford a new BMW, they will put all their $$ on a good attorney who will make the case I just outlined.

It was a 2018. Where are you getting that it was a new BMW?

BMW 5 series from 2018 (for example 550ix) is around 40K if the car is in a solid condition. If they can afford a 40K car for their 18-years old son, they can find a good attorney.

The story goes he saved fir the past 2 years to afford the down payment himself. None of that matters now.

No, sorry, it was a hand me down. You don't know what you're talking about.

Does a 2018 have extensive telematics? My 2017 and 2021 vehicles are light-years apart technologically.

The Saab 9000 in Sweden have had extensive telematics to recreate an accident since 1992, so yeah

Please stop trying to figure out how this young adult obtained this car. I don’t care if his parents bought it for him as a grad present or if he was taking Dad’s new (to him) car out for a spin. Maybe the driver is a drug dealer and paid for the car with a pile of cash. That’s relevant.

Irrelevant details and my concern is we collectively will lose focus on the actual crimes he committed.

+1 But that is a defense diversion so expect it to continue.

Police are on the scene continuing to investigate this morning.

I agree that we should not focus on the driver’s car until we have more facts. We know speed was a factor and alcohol was not. Many people in this area have money and buy their kids expensive, fast cars. So that is a conversation to have, along with all the concerns about Blake Lane speeding and accidents. It is not a designated school zone, nor is Sutton. Lee Hwy near Fairfax High is a school zone. So clearly room for improvement there, even if it might not have prevented this accident.

The whole community is coming together and it’s a comforting thing to see. Oakton has great leadership and staff, Fairfax/Oakton area has amazing first responders who were on scene quickly and neighbors who were willing to act until help arrived, including administering CPR.

My thoughts are with the family and friends of the girls, and I’m hopeful for a full recovery for the girl in the hospital. But I am also hoping that justice will be served, that we will not forget what happened and that we will all be more careful on the roads.

The father of one the deceased girls was on television. He’s a far stronger person than me. I wouldn’t be able hold it together like him.

Who told you that?

Anonymous.

Yeah, thought so. I doubt the spoiled rotten kid put a dime towards the car.

Stop. Unless you personally know these people, quit speculating. That goes for you and for PP. Just stop. It's not helpful.

It might not have hit him yet. A lot if times when there's an unexpected and shocking death, it iremains surreal. In this case, there are a lot of distractions and logistics going on (police interviews, paperwork, lawyers, insurance companies , media frenzy) to boot.

The reality of the tragedy will set in when Dad comes to the realization his little girl is no longer in her bedroom or coming downstairs for dinner. The small normal things.

Absolute flat affect. That poor man is in shock. He’s not holding it together. It just hasn’t hit him yet. Awful.

Yes, I do feel bad for everyone too. BUT the driver had a reckless disregard for the safety of others if he's driving that fast. And he definitely INTENDED to speed. No one forced him to speed. He deserves lots of jail time for his cavalier attitude endangering others. Do you want a society where vehicular manslaughter goes unpunished or gets a slap on their wrist?
