900 unvaccinated DC firefighters could lose their jobs Sept 30

It will be interesting to see how many firefighters ultimately quit over this.

Firefighters are far more likely to be responding to medical calls -including from people with covid - than house fires. And in those medical calls they are interacting with medically vulnerable people, and obviously putting themselves at risk for catching and then transmitting covid to the next vulnerable patient they see.

All first responders should be vaccinated.

Last year, COVID was the leading cause of job-related death for police officers. And they have a very low vaccination rate. It's insane -- they are sworn to protect people, but they won't get a vaccine that will protect them and others from an infection that could be deadly. Both groups frequently respond to calls involving medical emergencies, and interact with medically vulnerable people. They need to be vaccinated.

I'm sure the whining will be remarkable.

I'd love to understand the psychology behind all of this.

I think these groups feel entitled to gorge themselves at the public trough, consequences be damned. They should start now by cutting OT for any unvaccinated first responder. That's a good first step to see how they respond to incentives.

I can't even imagine the entitled whining and meltdowns that will happen when their first paycheck is canceled.

These guys will fold like a cheap card table once the first paycheck doesn't clear their bank account. Guarantee it. These people really have some gall - they collect a taxpayer funded paycheck/pension/benefits, work a great schedule compared to cops or nurses/doctors, and generally spend a lot of time around the firehouse. Prior to 2014, a DC firefighter worked an average of 8 days per month which was costing the city gobs of money due to a bloated FD.

Let them quit.

Last thing I need is some infected firefighter coming into my house to help my mother in law and infect her and my kids.

The challenge for them is that they live together in the firehouse so they are particularly vulnerable.

So why exactly are so many fire fighters refusing to be vaccinated? Is it because they're Republican?

There are all these groups like firefighters for freedom and nurses for freedom. It's their choice to remain unvaccinated, but the cost of that freedom is losing your job.

I've started to see some companies raising insurance premiums for unvaccinated workers and requiring weekly covid tests at employees' expense. Personally, I'm only aware of two vaccinate hold-outs and both have crumbled. I suspect firefighters will crumble, too.

Eh, I tend to think that a paycheck is a stronger motivator than a shaky anti-vax principle.

Especially the overtime and benefits.

Probably under 10. They will sue. And they will lose.

Good time to bring out the stick. These unvaccinated people are parasites.

I support the vaccination requirement, but it's funny how many people on this thread seem to think that only unvaccinated people can infect others with COVID-19.

Many DC firefighters do no live in DC. They are from MD suburbs. And yes, many, many are conservative. Just like cops.

A lot come from beyond MD--lots of DE, PA, WV plates parked (illegally, but they have fire insignia and equipment in their trucks so nobody's gonna ticket them) next to the fire and police stations in my neighborhood. If you work long shifts but only a few days a week, it's easy to just drive in but you and your family live elsewhere.
