Firefighters are far more likely to be responding to medical calls -including from people with covid - than house fires. And in those medical calls they are interacting with medically vulnerable people, and obviously putting themselves at risk for catching and then transmitting covid to the next vulnerable patient they see.

All first responders should be vaccinated.

Last year, COVID was the leading cause of job-related death for police officers. And they have a very low vaccination rate. It's insane -- they are sworn to protect people, but they won't get a vaccine that will protect them and others from an infection that could be deadly. Both groups frequently respond to calls involving medical emergencies, and interact with medically vulnerable people. They need to be vaccinated.

I'd love to understand the psychology behind all of this.

I think these groups feel entitled to gorge themselves at the public trough, consequences be damned. They should start now by cutting OT for any unvaccinated first responder. That's a good first step to see how they respond to incentives.

I can't even imagine the entitled whining and meltdowns that will happen when their first paycheck is canceled.

What is the solution in your eyes? They need to be vaccinated. They aren’t. It’s not like they will be saving the city being put on some kind of non public-facing position where their vaccine status won’t affect anyone.

Raise their insurance premiums, require frequent testing with the cost deducted from their paychecks.

That would be a great incentive if there is enough staff to cover all open shifts.

Huge numbers of LEOs are pretty far right, so they are undoubtedly drinking the anti-vaxx, don't-tread-on-my-civil-liberties Kool aid. Also, they tend not to be the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.

Notice how the headline s about to lose their job. The OP will not be posting on Nov 30 when 899 of those 900 will either have gotten the shot by Sept 30 or the following month after losing their paycheck.

Lots of people say they'll quit, but then when the rubber meets the road, they choose to keep their jobs.

We have more firefighters than we need in DC, so this shouldn't be a big deal. There are not that many fires or other things where firefighters are needed. They usually come to medical emergencies, and it would be cheaper and better to have paramedics and EMTs and nurse practitioners and social workers depending on the type of call. For a lot of medical calls, sending someone an uber to a clinic would be a lot cheaper and result in appropriate care. We do need health care providers but a whole lot of 911 calls don't get the most cost-effective response now.

This. Firefighters who are mostly responding to medical emergencies and accidents on a daily basis need vaccines.
As another pp pointed out, many of them are living together in the station.

As of today, two more friends of mine have been diagnosed with breakthrough Covid infections, a month after they were ordered back to work in person.

We don't need firefighters and other emergency responders out enmass because a substantial number were unvaccinated. It's going to be difficult as it is, even with everyone vaccinated.

Each shift is together for 24 hours. There will be no way to prevent exposure from the unvaxxed. Breakthrough cases are bad enough, but no one should be at risk from the unvaxxed at work as a first responder/medical personnel. Get vaxxed or GTFO.

Nope.

You see there is a waitlist of people wanting that job. Yay. They will now be moved up. The old boys club will be trashed. Fun stuff.

Let them go idiots.

This is a no-brainer. Who wants an unvaxxed medic breathing down on you in the ambulance?! Bye!

These guys will fold like a cheap card table once the first paycheck doesn't clear their bank account. Guarantee it. These people really have some gall - they collect a taxpayer funded paycheck/pension/benefits, work a great schedule compared to cops or nurses/doctors, and generally spend a lot of time around the firehouse. Prior to 2014, a DC firefighter worked an average of 8 days per month which was costing the city gobs of money due to a bloated FD.

Correction: 900 DC firefighters will voluntarily give up their jobs because they refuse to take a free and easy measure to do the absolute bare minimum for public safety.

Good. There are waitlists of people ready to take those jobs.
