Even as a very young adult in the 90s, buying my first mattress, I knew it was max 10 years, but really more like 7ish.

Beware of trying out mattresses in the store though--they don't feel the same when you get the new one home. I bought one last summer that felt great in the store but killed my back, so I returned it and got a different ultra plush pillow top that turned out to be ultra firm. I ended up going to Ikea and getting a pillow top for it which helps, but I'd rather just have a mattress that feels like the one I picked out in the store.[/quote]

If you read further in the thread, you will see I am now convinced. But I never *read* 20 years anywhere... I literally just assumed based on family experience. I'm usually a big time researcher, but I haven't bought a mattress in almost 20 years, when both the Internet and I were pretty young. And my family never talked about it, and I never happened upon a magazine article that explained it, so I guess I'd been living in ignorance![/quote]
