Do people really always tip 10-20% on carry out orders? Still?

I guarantee most people leave zero.

Now that things are lightening up and we are doing some outdoor dining at restaurants I am doing more like 10-15% on take out tips. I’m slowly rolling it back as things get more back to normal.

Same here

I consider us very wealthy, although maybe DCUM doesn't consider us wealthy, family of 4, $350k gross between two of us.

We tip 20% on take out, because we want all these restaurants to still exist after the pandemic. So many are hurting, us paying an additional $20 won't hurt us and may help the restaurant or it's employees.

Same, exactly

This, except a rare occasion as tipping is for service.

The service is taking your order, packing it up, dealing with you at the counter. They do not get minimum wage. Tips are assumed.

Hostess and cashiers are paid at least minimum wage.

2-3 dollars? Do you just reach into your bag/pocket and throw whatever loose change you have at them? Super cheap, particularly in a pandemic.

I tip for delivery, but not takeout. Unless something really extraordinary happens. One worker spent 5 min going over the menu with me after they were out of my DS’s favorite dish.

Does it make you feel better to shame people who might have little spare income and also deserve an occasional treat?

If you’re getting food at a restaurant, hostesses are not always paid minimum wage because it’s assumed they get tips on takeout. Sometimes bartenders handle takeout, and they make less than minimum wage AND they have to tip out other staff members, like the people who box up your food and bring it to the bar or hostess stand.
DH and I are poor by DCUM standards and we always tip at least 20%. I will never understand the wealthy people on this board who can’t add an additional $5-$10 to their order! Y’all are cheap.

I ran a chain restaurant and many of them have dedicated "to go servers" who are paid less than $3 at the time to do all the work to get you the food. 10% should be the minimum. Especially during covid. they are paid as if they are tipped. You can't rant about the issue with that, but the fact is, they are and it is legal. Mine were paid 2.125 in the 2000's

And I actually wanted to reward some great employees with higher wages and got told that they should be promoted to "regular" servers because I needed to stop paying people more than that for to go service.

Maybe those people packing your order also have little spare income (particularly during a pandemic when they were out of work for months) and also deserve to be paid fairly? Are all these DCUM posters barely scraping by?

I tip at least a dollar per person for whom I'm ordering (in my case $5 for our family of five. It takes time to pack up the food, and the takeout containers and utensils can't be reused the way serveware can be reused in a restaurant.

Doesn’t that indicate that the to go people did less serving work than the regular servers, so it made sense for the regular servers to have a higher wage?
