If I could get into Harvard, I would have a good shot at MIT and Stanford. Those are no brainers to pick over Harvard for engineering. Beyond that, I’d still need to seriously think about it vs. Berkeley, Cal Tech, CMU, Cornell, etc. Depends on how serious I was about engineering. VA Tech? It’s a good program but also many negatives. Not likely to pick it over Harvard. |
Talk about reductive thinking. There are differences in the programs. Michigan is culturally more similar to Va Tech. UVA is a smaller, which can be more appealing and a better fit. Both will result in an excellent education. OP knows whether that will matter to their kids success and/or happiness in a program. I have family that have attended CS programs at both. OP can take or leave my point of view, but I added where I went so as to be as transparent as possible. |
Putting engineering alone, Michigan is tied @4 and UVA is #41 https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/eng-rankings |
| I just have to laugh at these nonsense. I just hired a recently James Madison CS graduate and another recently U. of Michigan CS graduate and they both got paid the same salary, 94k/yr, for the same position. |

UVA doesn’t have a co-op program?
Michigan research brings in lots of money and provides a lot of resources (specialized labs, etc). Great for even undergrads to get involved in cool new stuff. |
Nope https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/uva-co-op-program/1989273 |
Michigan and UVA are similar in prestige otherwise; Harvard and VT are not. |
Michigan is around 30,000 undergraduate students and UVA is around 18,000. Most top privates have around 6,000 undergraduate students |
Michigan is top ten in Computer Engineering. |
| Just go to VaTech. |
USC has 48,000 students and is private. NYU has 52,000 students and is private. Both are peers of UVA And both are private. 25,000 students is a very large public school. You’re acting as if UVA is a LAC. Btw, Penn State and Ohio State are not peers to UCLA and Michigan. Also smaller private schools can and do excel in STEM, unlike UVA which does not. |
Michigan is culturally more similar to UVA than VaTech. Academically, Michigan is more similar to elite privates than UVA in STEM. |
I just hired a guy for more than that with no degree. |
| It’s funny how so man UVA partisans seem to portray Michigan as some huge party school. It is a large school to be sure, but has the resources to support its students. It’s also one of the more intellectually stimulating environments in the entire country. Certainly on par or better overall than UVA in almost every imaginable way. |

UMich is twice as large. You may not get the class you want.
