Engineering - Umich (OOS) - Uva (InState)

I disagree that Michigan is soooooo much better than UVA. UVA is a top school. Why would you waste money on a school like Michigan when you have UVA? UVA has a stellar reputation. There is no choice here. Save your money.

You’re trying to reason with a UVA booster. That’s a top ten waste of time.

~$132k difference between tuition across four years.

Michigan is unquestionably a better engineering school. Still, if I were in state, I'd go with UVA. I had two kids go to UVA, and one of them had a roommate who studied engineering. She is now doing VERY well for herself.

That search is for schools that offer doctorates. Putting engineering alone as a search term defaults to national rankings #24 and #26. Michigan is better by ranking and reputation but not by all that much.

Exactly so is it worth the extra tuition, weather and distance? Only the OP can say.

Link? Rando ranking put out by UVA grads?

Let’s look at USNWR mechanical engineering.
Michigan #4
UVA not ranked

Aerospace
Michigan #4
UVA not ranked

Neither are top 10 for CS.

Michigan is indisputably the “better” engineering school. There are other factors to consider when deciding on a school, but that part isn’t really up for debate.

Both are great. The kid should go where they’ll be happier. Ann Arbor is cool, but you have to love winter.

Michigan is considered better for both CS and Engineering. For CS though, UVA is good enough and Michigan is not so amazing to be worth out-of-state tuition (i.e. Berkeley).

For engineering, its up in the air whether the out-of-state tuition is worth it. Michigan is essentially right behind MIT, Stanford and Berkeley in engineering, comparable to Cornell, Georgia Tech, etc.

Within engineering, there are certain disciplines that UVA is good enough yet and has good recruitment.

Another important factor to consider is the number of enrollment. UVA has 25,000 whereas UMich is almost double the size at 48,000. One distinction between public school and private school is enrollment size with public schools much bigger. A student, especially an undergraduate is like a drop of water in an ocean, can feel ignored in a huge public school. UVA is more toward a private school experience while UMich is the definition of humongous public schools like Penn State, Ohio State, UCLA, etc. So very different experiences.

By these rankings, Harvard is way behind VTech in engineering. But I still prefer Harvard if I were accepted to both. You don't?

You can get any job with a UVA engineering degree that you would get with a Michigan degree. Save the money.
