Another important factor to consider is the number of enrollment. UVA has 25,000 whereas UMich is almost double the size at 48,000. One distinction between public school and private school is enrollment size with public schools much bigger. A student, especially an undergraduate is like a drop of water in an ocean, can feel ignored in a huge public school. UVA is more toward a private school experience while UMich is the definition of humongous public schools like Penn State, Ohio State, UCLA, etc. So very different experiences.
USC has 48,000 students and is private. NYU has 52,000 students and is private. Both are peers of UVA And both are private. 25,000 students is a very large public school. You’re acting as if UVA is a LAC. Btw, Penn State and Ohio State are not peers to UCLA and Michigan. Also smaller private schools can and do excel in STEM, unlike UVA which does not.
