Must suck to bust your ass and go to one of the best HSs in the US....only to go to a state university. They could have done that from any of the countless mediocre HSs. |
The negative connotation has more to do with the social aspects. Or self-inflating one’s credentials to come across as more than you are. Nothing wrong with working hard. Just don’t misrepresent yourself. |

That is why numbers to UVA have been going down last several years. They take solace in the fact that TJ grads are usually in the top 5-10% of the collage graduating class and in great shape to go on to PhD programs and medical schools.

UVA became more selective since 2015. For everyone. Regardless of whether you go to TJ or another school.
Can we get an IP ban on the OP? Topping UVA posts, constantly bashing. Their schtick is so tedious...and I’m a UVA fan. |
Totally agree. There is someone on here who just wants to beat up on UVA. I'm not saying that UVA is perfect, but say something helpful or interesting, even if it's a contrary opinion. Instead, all we get is stupid nonsense that everyone knows is BS. Despite what Trump suggests, repeating lies does not make them true. And, resurrecting old UVA hate threads doesn't make them any more relevant today than in the past. |
The number declined at all Virginia publics from 179 to 84 (UVA from 81 to 40). I think the appeal of OOS options is in play. |
What number? There are three relevant numbers here. The number of students who applied, the number who were admitted, and the number who enrolled. There's no way for anyone here to know the first two with any certainty. The previous post stands. Wringing your hands over fewer TJ kids getting into any competitive college today compared to a few years ago doesn't make sense. Admissions is more competitive now. |
W&M and Vatech are safeties and UVA is an almost safety for TJ so acceptance is not a significant factor. UVA is just not attractive for stem majors. |
About 80% of TJ applicants are accepted by UVA. |
It's closer to 85%. |
This is attending. It is most relevant from the standpoint of determining whether Virginia (the state, not UVA specifically) is keeping talent in state from one of the top high schools in the country. That number has gone down significantly. |

Congrats to your student, pp. I am a PA native and MD resident. I just don't understand the hate. UVA was my first choice back in the 80's. I did not get in (and happily attended my 2nd choice). My boss at my first (DC area) job attended a different VA university. We were talking one day and UVA came up. I was like, oh, my first choice, blah blah blah. He looked at me and said, if you had gone to UVA and I saw that on your resume, I would not have interviewed you. He was a very down to earth soft spoken nice guy, around 30 and married to a Mary Washington (place where you board a horse?) grad. I was taken aback and thought he was joking. He was not. I think of that exchange when I read some of these threads. |
