UVA was my first choice back in the 80's. I did not get in (and happily attended my 2nd choice).

My boss at my first (DC area) job attended a different VA university. We were talking one day and UVA came up. I was like, oh, my first choice, blah blah blah. He looked at me and said, if you had gone to UVA and I saw that on your resume, I would not have interviewed you. He was a very down to earth soft spoken nice guy, around 30 and married to a Mary Washington (place where you board a horse?) grad. I was taken aback and thought he was joking. He was not. I think of that exchange when I read some of these threads.

NP. Yep, UVA does not have a... stellar reputation (let's just say that) among a significant subset of employers.

Perhaps I’m hopelessly dense, but what point are you trying to make - that UVA has a less than stellar reputation with what subset of employers exactly? All PP revealed about her former employer is that he and/or his wife went to a lower-ranked in state school. Is that the type of employer UVA has a less than stellar reputation with? That doesn’t sound particularly concerning to me.

I'm one of the commenters above, and although I don't condone the all-out baseless bashing of any one school, I can assure you I'm not masquerading as multiple people in this thread, so there are at least a few people who share my opinion.

Take this all with a hefty grain of salt, sure, but what I have heard through the grapevine is that UVA grads are seen as overtly preppy and can present a culture fit challenge to certain companies.

Seriously people, saying that employers (or a “certain subset”) will not hire UVA grads is absolutely ridiculous. Sure there are some schools hiring managers may favor it maybe dislike for various reasons but the make a blanket statement like that is ludicrous. I have a friend who went to Uva (out of state - OMG people outside VA have heard of it?) and got a great job in IT right out of school, a few years later got his MBA in Finance at U Of Chicago and went onto make millions on Wall Street, recruited by just about every top firm. I personally am in the executive search business and everyone I know including our many clients sees UVA as a solid school with a +1 if you see that on their resume. No it’s not the cache of Ivy League but definitely seen as a top state school. Anyone saying differently has an agenda.

No one is saying UVA is HPY. What people are saying - and it is true - is that UVA is Georgetown, Notre Dame, Emory, UNC, Michigan (I.e. similarly ranked) for 40% the cost. And, it’s much closer to the DMV than many of those schools, has great school spirit and athletics, and top-notch graduate programs too. Essentially, it is a massive value in an elite or near-elite space. Personally, I don’t know of another college that can match UVA’s value for an in-state, full-pay student. If it wasn’t already clear, that’s the appeal. Somehow though, I think everyone already knows this, but there is jealousy among those who can’t partake and probably a bit too much excitement, turned pride and even arrogance, among those who can.
