Irrational things that annoy me about Gilmore Girls

That’s the Sorkin walk and talk. Not that it shouldn’t annoy you, but it’s not an accident

It’s not a Sorkin show. And on actual Sorkin shows, the characters are usually extremely well-educated professionals in very fast-paced, demanding jobs. So it makes more sense, at least, even if it’s still not very true to life.

They also draw from references that few people, other than TV writers I guess, would get. They’ll reference Bjork, the Bronte sisters, and the Bubble boy in the same breath, and the other person will immediately know exactly what they are talking about. It’s absurd.

See, that's the part that rang true for me. I mean, my references might be different...but my college roommate/BFF and I had conversations like that all the time. Of course, everyone else thought we were nuts...so maybe there's a pattern here.

So for all the people saying they have unrealistic weight/food thing. I disagree.

For one, a blogger went on the GG coffee and take out diet and actually LOST weight. She thought the extra coffee filled her up and she didn't eat as much. You will notice, L&R talk a big game, order a lot, but they don't always eat it. Luke brings them a huge plate of diner food and then they run off. I'm not saying it's ideal...very wasteful....but they often fill up on coffee and pick at the food.

I picture Lorelei chugging coffee all morning and not eating all day, then going home and eating take out...but calorically it works out.

Also, in Rory's case, I ate "like a trucker" growing up my mom would say, and I was struggled to be over 95 pounds. I am just teeny and i had a fast metabolism. Stress makes me lose weight too - my wedding dress hung off me even though I had fittings weeks before - I was eating normally but the excitement, food would just melt off. It does change as you age but Rory was young. There are young girls who can eat a lot and be tiny.

The fast talking is so unnatural- especially the fast responding... I think it’s my biggest pet peeve. No one communicates like that, without ever needing to pause for one second to consider what the other person just said.

Much of what others have written didn't bother me but KIRK dear lord, one more appearance from that guy. Sheesh. And Taylor. Argh.

My aunt worked on the show and dished behind the scenes about how Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel couldn't stand each other and weren't very nice to work with. Likewise for Lauren and the guy who played Luke. She said the nice ones were Sally Struthers and Miss Patty. And she said the girl who played April was a sweetheart. That whole plot line, of course, was cooked up by the replacement writers who were brought in to muck everything up so they could eke out another season. Such a shame. If ASP had been allowed to end it on her terms it would have been much better.

Here's what really annoyed me:
- the older I got the more Lorelai's behavior toward her mother seemed less like well-placed rebellion against the excesses of wealth and more like rudeness.
- Doula as a baby name. Geez

Things to love about it:
- Rory is an unapologetic nerd
- Suki is awesome and they NEVER ever mention Melissa McCarthy's weight. It's just irrelevant.

And finally - we wouldn't have Marvelous Mrs. Maisel without this. This is like the little sister to that show, where ASP is allowed to create at full power and creative control with a cinematic budget. A glory to behold. Do all of you who hate fast-talking mind it in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? How could they?

It's a TV show, people. They have to do tons of takes for each scene so they aren't going to eat much. And their cups never look like they have anything in them.

Here is the journalist that ate like a GG for a week and lost weight: https://www.marieclaire.com/food-cocktails/news/a18268/gilmore-girls-diet/

Does it help if you knew that show-runner Amy Sherman-Palladino said she was going for a 1940s golden-age of Hollywood, Hepburn and Tracy kind of vibe? It's not meant to be realism. It's meant to be stylish and snappy.

Them not getting along sounds like a rumor. I read elsewhere that the daughter from Parenthood and Alexis B. have a fake feud over who is the better daughter. That doesn't sound like people who don't get along.

I did hear that Luke IRL and Lorelei IRL had a strained relationship.

This was my impression as well.

What my aunt said was that neither Lauren nor Alexis had a good work ethic. They wouldn't study lines ahead of time. Lauren was quick and could learn to say it correctly by the third take. Alexis, not so much. Made for stressful working conditions. Perhaps bad habits learned from Lauren.

I had a dim view of Alexis and her acting ability after that but she's gone on to do seriously great work on "The Handmaid's Tale" so perhaps she was just immature. She married "Pete" from "Mad Men" a real weirdo. But she may have turned out okay after spending her teenage years in the spotlight.

What was confusing to me were Lorelai's intentions. She kept pushing her parents away and displayed a large amount of disdain for her upper class upbringing. Yet...she wanted Rory to have all the things she had growing up. Her great quest on the show is to ensure Rory goes to a posh prep school and public school is not enough for her precious daughter. She wants Rory to travel to Europe and shge wants Rory to have a prestigious journalism job on TV.

The hypocrisy was astounding.

You're clearly not from NYC. I talk that fast, as does a lot of my family, as do a lot of my friends.

I’m from NYC and the fast talking is what annoyed me about the show as an actual teenager when it was on. It was more tolerable watching as an adult. I like the marvelous Mrs. maisel - also an Amy Sherman Palladino show for anyone who didn’t already know- much better. Marvelous Mrs maisel also has fast talking but I think I found lorelai annoying.

Yeah - that was what made her interesting. She eschewed what she'd grown up with except she'd also internalized the values except she also pushed her daughter away when she decided she LIKED that life. She was a hot mess of contradictions!

It was like Rory aged in reverse. I really liked the character in Season 1 and 2, and then all went downhill from there. Don't get me started on her in the revival series. She was truly awful.

Always felt bad for Lane. Why couldn't they write a better storyline for her? Still annoyed that they didn't give Lane a good story in the revival series either.

Lorelei’s creepy investment in Dean and Rory’s relationship (agreeing with R that it was a HUGE deal that she lost his bracelet and he would be totally validated in being mad at her about it; reinforcing other unhealthy relationship dynamics and Dean’s controlling tendencies). The constant validation of Rory as a wunderkind despite her being pretty normal if bright. Also the idea that she somehow is a loner/alt kid at Chilton because she likes music and reading. Lorelai’s complete inability to see why Jess didn’t appreciate her “BTDT, I was a cool bad kid too” shtick. The writing makes it seem like we should be on board with all these things as viewers, which makes me wonder whether Amy Sherman Paladino is completely disconnected from how awful Lorelei and Rory really are. They are legitimately bad people.
