Irrational things that annoy me about Gilmore Girls

Yeah, I really disliked this show.

And it showed disordered eating. The only way you could stay thin eating all of that is to develop an eating disorder.

Do you mean Rory being thin? I ate like a horse as a teen and weighed 92 pounds when I graduated HS. I weigh 136 now—basically gained a pound or two per year. Some teens are just skinny.

How did Lorelai afford all their food, their amazing wardrobes and the furniture in her giant house without a college degree and a small town job?
Why did every guy fall in love with Rory?

That’s the Sorkin walk and talk. Not that it shouldn’t annoy you, but it’s not an accident

It’s not a Sorkin show. And on actual Sorkin shows, the characters are usually extremely well-educated professionals in very fast-paced, demanding jobs. So it makes more sense, at least, even if it’s still not very true to life.

They also draw from references that few people, other than TV writers I guess, would get. They’ll reference Bjork, the Bronte sisters, and the Bubble boy in the same breath, and the other person will immediately know exactly what they are talking about. It’s absurd.

OMG I legit laughed out loud. So true.

You do realize it's a TV show, yeah? The suspension of disbelief is usually a requisite. The references make it timeless, I pick up new things each time I rewatch. ASP (Writer) is a gift to the world and GG was a great show.

That BnB was ALWAYS busy. It did very well. I didn't think their wardrobe was that amazing - jeans, sweaters and boots? The furniture looked like antiques - maybe Lane's mom helped out. But hell I live in San Francisco and sometimes when people are moving they put furniture on the street to be taken. My daughter has a huge wooden dresser someone left for the taking.

A single mom running a b&b in a small town with no financial help from anyone would not be able to have a designer wardrobe for herself and her teenage daughter.

Did Lorelai only take tuition money from her parents? I just started watching GG recently, no particular reason. Season 1 is like a time capsule.

That's what the show tells us - it's a point of pride for Lorelei. She manages a small town inn... it's not exactly a well paid job.

...I have given this too much thought

She's been doing it for 18 years or so at the beginning of the show - which, without any crazy expenses, is enough time to have saved up money. Plus she has the backstop of her parents' wealth (as we see). Enough to buy a nice house, wear new clothes all the time, and never cook? I don't know - but it seems possible, anyway. Stars Hollow seems to have a number of people working ordinary jobs, who live pleasant middle class lives.

But yeah - oof, Rory. She is a piece of work.

One of my fun GG thought experiments is to imagine how Rory and Lorelei would be treated if they weren't gorgeous - like if they were this demanding, bratty, bossy, gluttonous, all these things, without having the benefit of beauty. What would life be like for them then?

I should add: I love this show, despite it being a strange world.

I just couldn’t get over Dean getting married at that young an age. Like on 90210, so unrealistic.

Gilmore Girls is like a non animated cartoon

I hate Rory.

Love this show, but pet peeves:

-Rory being valedictorian (as another poster mentioned) and getting into literally every Ivy. Makes no sense given her D paper and 0 on the exam in Mr. Medina's class (wow, that was embarrassingly specific). Also, no way Harvard would've rejected Paris with her stats, educational pedigree, and insane legacy status!
-Luke and Dean's evolutions--they started out being interesting characters with a bit of depth, but turned into one-dimensional shells near the end (see, for example, the whole Valentine's Day episode at Logan's parents' beach house).
-Both being skinny with all the junk food they binge
-Anything to do with April (Luke's daughter)
-Anything to do with Luke's sister and TJ
-Jess's turnaround from uncaring jerk to deep, caring, thoughtful guy--this doesn't happen in real life

Wow, clearly I need therapy just from GG !

Everything about April irritated me.

Dean made way more sense to me getting married early than Lane. That was crazy!

I actually sort of bought both of them getting married early. Though in Dean's case it seemed natural, and also I thought led to one of the more emotionally complex storylines in GG - and finally, too, led to Rory not being such an angel. In Lane's case it seemed sort of tragic. Zach seemed unworthy and it was so miserable that she had sex once - hated it, but ended up pregnant with twins. What was she being punished for?!

So, I think several years ago, there was a DCUM thread about Lorelai's wardrobe (too much GG and DCUM for me, I guess). I think that the discussion said that LG's wardrobe designer complained that she always wanted unrealistically designer costumers. Others on DCUM, however, seemed to think that you could easily thrift a wardrobe like hers given that they are close to wealthy CT wardrobes. I don't know. As a grad student in the Boston-area, I was able to thrift a lot of good condition designer clothing...but it's a decent amount of work and you have to go frequently. Living in Star's Hollow, that doesn't seem practical. Also, they never talk about thrift store shopping and occasionally show them shopping at real stores.

And, now, I've officially thought more about GG than 99.99999% of the population

I think it's a window into how messed up ASP is. Bunheads just laid it all out.
