Gym reopening - what was it like?

Anonymous
It was fine. Less people to deal with. All you people that are scared can stay home. Everyone I see pre/post covid is cleaning the equipment before/after each use. BFD!

Gyms are just opening in my area. I hope the changes my gym made for swimming stay forever. You can sign up for a one hour slot for a lane up to 48 hours in advance. My husband and I treat it like buying concert tickets and login EXACTLY 48 hours in advance— we don’t swim at the same time so whoever is not swimming is responsible for getting the next slots. It is so awesome to be guaranteed a lane and not have to share, circle swim, etc.

There is nothing better than getting back into the water!

I went. I go to anytime fitness at off peak hours ( 6am or 7pm depending on work load)It’s a small gym with a lot of equipment . I like this because there aren’t as many people coming in and out like there are at LA fitness. Wipe down equipment before and after. Where mask as needed. Shower as soon as I get home. I still have dumbbells that I do arm stuff with.

Ive gone to my personal training gym. I carried around hand sanitizer and spritzed before and after. There were only 2-3 other people in the gym with their trainers. So 4-6 people total. We passed by each other (less than 6 feet) but people were very far away from each other. Since we were all weight lifting, everyone was wearing masks (including the trainers). I'm ok going as long as the gym owner doesn't let more people in at one time.

Gyms have been opened in other states for a month now and are not seeing outbreaks directly related to gyms . Don't go if you are worried. I am not ready to eat inside a restaurant but walking from front desk to pool and out felt like a risk I was willing to take. We will all need to decide for ourselves but with no treatment or vaccine, we may have to accept we will most likely get it unless you never leave your home. I am anxious to see how the virus spreads with all these protests.

In March, I remember Fauci saying we were all going to get it but we need to flatten the curve. It all made sense to me and I assumed the area under the curve was the same. Obviously I do not want to be sick or have a family member get sick, but this may be our new life. We are a very entitled society who expect medical experts to fix everything. I hope a vaccine occurs but can't wait to read how no one wants to get the vaccine because of possible unknown side effects. I would expect cases to increase once we open and have more testing available. Not sure why everyone thinks we could just get rid of it.

Medicine has done a great job at extending our lifespans but it really can't fix everything. I do not feel confident a proven vaccine will be available soon. I am more hoping that treatments become available and the virus mutates so it is not as deadly. I am also one of those people that believes it is much more widespread than we think which makes death rate lower. This is one of the few diseases we now are testing asympomatic cases 'just to to see'. I know some surgeons do blood work before procedures to check for hepatitis, HIV, diabetes, etc we don't usually just test people to see if they have a flu virus or cold virus with no symptoms. I had a surgery last year and no blood work was done at all. I am in my late 40s and haven't had blood work done in five years. I do think I need to get things checked and was surprised it wasn't ordered. I had general. I consider myself healthy but who knows...I think I need to go get some blood work done now

I understand flatting the curve and remember him talking about the importance of that and how we can't eliminate the virus risk completely, but I do not recall him saying "we are all going to get it." I don't think that is true. He's pretty old: surely he doesn't intend to just buy some time before he gets it, nor does he suggest that for others over 65. I'm 37 and I'd rather not get it, or the flu, and I try my best not to and though it's possible I don't see it as an inevitability. Did he actually say that, or are you interpreting?

I went to Red Effect. Been every day. Lots of precautions. LOVED it. Going tomorrow and every single other day.

I was very excited to go back, but have an event in a couple weeks I DO NOT want to be sick or in quarantine for. Will probably hold off until it’s over.

(I’m in my 20s and healthy, so not really high risk).

This thread makes me increasingly convinced that the ‘keep things shut down forever’ crew didn’t go anywhere or so much to begin with...so they weren’t really missing anything.

Great for me. Boxing gym that's class based and there were 5 people in the session I chose. We've always wiped down our own bag and now they spray down the whole place and have hours in between classes. I needed that workout...sore today!

This sounds disgusting.

NP. Pretty sure he predicted 80% of NYC area would get it within a year.

At my gym, they require a temperature check, masks in common areas, and regular wiping before/after equipment. It's a little weird and tedious, but fine. Limited numbers both on the fitness floor and in classes (which require registration and checkin)

Obviously if you are sick, a high risk group, and highly anxious, stay home. But many of us are physically and mentally healthy, and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy immune system - which includes exercise. If you are an anxious person, going to the gym isn't going to help your immune system simply because of the stress factor. For a person who is not anxious, their stresses are not going to be high and their immune response will be much stronger.

There are some people that are grossed about by sweat, and those people are just germphobies. They were germophobes before, so not much has changed for them.

For those of us who made a regular habit of exercise for both physical and mental health, it's not that big of a deal to return. And we also tend to value quality of life. Being able to take a fun zumba class again with friends in a spacious room is good for us--inside and out.

At Planet fitness: No masks required. For cardio equipment - to off, one on. Spray bottles available for cleaning as usual. People generally avoiding each other, but no apparent protocols. Showers closed.

* TWO off, one on. Two empty machines on either side of your cardio machine.

Anonymous wrote:I went for yoga, but had the wrong time, and didn't want to wait more than an hour for the yoga class to start. I was not intending to use the weights and treadmill.... but I figured I was there and gave it a try. (the is LA Fitness).

I had at least 10 ft. b/t me and any other person on a treadmill/machine.

They give you a spray bottle of disinfectant to take around the weights machines. I used that to spray and wipe every machine I used both before and after I used it. They had taken about half of the machines out of service. They also removed the big mats that are used for stretching. I wish they had left those b/c I could have sprayed those down (unlike the carpet -- which I couldn't spray down) before stretching.

Anyway -- there weren't a ton of people there, but some. I generally kept my distance from others. I always have washed my hands with soap before I leave the gym. So, I think it was a pretty good experience.

If it had as many people as it usually has on a Sat. or Sun. morning -- then I wouldn't want to be there. But, with fewer people going, and it being a pretty big space (ceiling is like 3 stories high), I feel it was a reasonable activity.

I am going back on Monday for yoga. I assumed everyone would wear a mask -- but after being there yesterday -- I doubt that anyone in yoga will wear a mask.

Oh, they also had marked out circles of 6 ft. diameter in the group exercise room. So you know where your space is.

What time of day did you go? Just wondering if there is a time of day that has fewer people in general....
