Some MD Restrictions Lifted Tomorrow

"The economy" isn't closed.

And while I am not one of the people who believes that everyone must not set foot out of doors until there's a vaccine, I do find this "die for the economy!" advocacy very unseemly. As though people were there for the economy, instead of the other way around.

How do people not understand that opening up prematurely is BAD for business?

LEt's say you open up. Can you afford to operate at half capacity?

Let's say you can hold the line at 50% your usual foot traffic. Are you aware that much less than 50% feels comfortable going out and about for nonessential services? Lower demand will make you operate at even less than 50%. Can you still afford to operate?

Let's say that people do actually feel comfortable coming out and there is a demand. Then cases spike again, triggering another lockdown. Can you afford to close up shop for another few months and resume this process all over again?

Ok. But when would you propose they reopen? Until they find a vaccine? They’ll all fail far before then

I'm not the PP, but I'm good with following the guidance of infectious-disease and public-health specialists. How about you?

When they have enough testing and contact tracing. Which can happen only when the federal government works with the state governors at an historic level of mobilization and coordination and the defense production act sets in to mass produce all equipment necessary and widely distributes it in a WWII type effort. This is the President's chance to shine, to stepTup to the plate and be a hero. This is his proverbial 3am call. This is the hardest job in the world, which he signed up for.

Oh wait... what's that... what does Trump have to say? "I don't take any responsibility at all."

Different PP, but no, I’m not. They have been wrong at every step - masks, no masks - vastly inflated projections that resulted in unnecessary shut downs in areas that weren’t NJ/NY. So they can advise but the government also needs input from others, including economists.

What a moron. Closing MOCo only hurts the businesses there. Doesn’t mean these residents won’t wander out and get Covid in other areas. Totally stupid move

Yes. 100% agree. We are in MoCo and will drive to whatever restaurants are open nearby in other counties/states.

You are sad, pathetic, self absorbed loser who is endangering literally everyone who interacts with you.

While I certainly hope you don’t get COVID (not because I care about you - I don’t - but rather for the sake of the innocent lives at stake from your selfishness) I will absolutely hope your house burns down while you’re away violating our lockdown somewhere that’s open.

You are scum.

NP. Wow you are on the crazy train PP! You are the exact person that needs to never leave their home. Stay away from everyone else we would like to live again.

Scum here. I hope my house burns down too, we can then cash out and move to an even nicer place. I’ll be enjoying dining outside this weekend!

One day, with the right leadership in office, we’ll be able to put antigovernment/anti-science scum like you in prison where you belong. Enjoy your little re-open protests. Because one day soon we will bring the hammer down on you.

Ok China

Infectious disease specialists: Everybody needs to stay home so vast numbers of people don't die.
Many people: Mostly stay home.
Infectious disease specialists: Good news, as a result of the staying-home, fewer people will die.
Other people: What? Vast numbers of people won't die? That stay-home thing was a total overreaction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL! That is literally never going to happen. Not with Trump, not with Biden, not with Bernie Sanders or Jill Stein (lol) or literally anyone else EVER. Enjoy your mental delusions though!

Funny you should mention that. Because China hasn’t had a case now in 30 days.

THAT is what leadership looks like. That is what believing in science looks like. They totally eliminated their outbreak in less time than you’ve been complaining about not being able to get your hair done.

Meanwhile we’re hours away from crossing the 100k dead mark. More dead than almost the whole rest of the world, put together.

Also, what do people think the economy is? It's people, doing stuff. There's not some separate thing that we open or close. There are people, making choices about whether to go shopping or whatever. If all the nail salons and whatever else open and people don't feel safe going to get their nails done, it won't really help the economy. Also, if illnesses and deaths increase because people are mixing more, the economy will suffer. Those "old" people who are most as risk are also a huge part of the economy, and if they get ill or die or are afraid to go to the movies, the economy will suffer. It's not like the economy is sealed off from the pandemic by an airlock; the two things are related. Every reputable economist I've read says that you fix the economy by controlling the pandemic.

I also hate the "reopening" language, like it's a door that's open or closed. It's more like a dial, where we increase or decrease restrictions on certain activities, along a continuum, based on risks. No American city has had a real lockdown like they did in Italy or Spain. We've had shelter-in-place orders, which have generally allowed people to leave their homes to exercise, buy groceries, etc. We can loosen some restrictions and tighten others in response to actual conditions.

Which is to open at 50 percent capacity, not 100 percent, regardless of when opening occurs.

I don't get it. Is the latest Republican talking point that there aren't 100,000 people dead from covid in the US?

^^^
Stop distracting from the point that you and other liberals are now saying we should be just like a totalitarian, human rights abusing state with no free news - so no we shouldn’t trust anything coming out of China.

I don’t see what the Republican talking points about numbers of deaths has to do with this. As an Independent, I’m telling you liberal Democrats that how you are now idolizing China is not a good look. This is what people wedded to a political party are blind too - hypocrisy. You actually want me to be upset that the Ds and Rs are squabbling over how many people actually died from this but you want me to hold
China as a shining example of what a state should be? China?

If I wrote this in China, I’d already be in a hole in the group!
