ITS changed first day of school

It is different because they have aftercare!

MV phases in Pk3 and PK4 over two days in the first week (not sure about aftercare), but K starts full day on Monday with the upper grades. Even though a lot of the kids are new to Spanish.

There are a number of schools that do half days regularly, I am forgetting which ones. But I remember hearing about half days at several different open houses. The YMCA has typically been pretty good about providing care during the breaks. In the past if you were enrolled in aftercare full time for the year breaks were include with the monthly price. My understanding is you can also enroll part-time, drop-in and breaks for the respective fees (plus the paperwork/enrollment fee.) If they keep this open for the half days it will be a pretty reasonable deal for families and they do have reduced rates families can apply as needed. As mentioned before the Rec Center also offers after school programs.

If you can afford it! MV aftercare costs more than ITDS last I heard. ITDS will likely have aftercare on the regular monthly half days the YMCA, there is a lot of time to figure it out.

It is so gross how this school constantly talks about "equity" but really everyone is assumed to be upper middle class.

Oh, wow, welcome back! You seem to be the same poster that is always calling things at ITDS "gross". As, someone else mentioned the middle class and above families are maybe out some cash. But, I feel worse for the teachers or staff that might have to make changes.
It was a pretty big error to announce the 1st day and but obliviously it was a error and the powers that be decided this was the easier fix. And it kind of is... 3 day adjustment. Either way it is done.

If you find it so horrible then volunteer to take the lead on setting up free or low cost program for the half days. Be part of the solution.

But are there any schools that are more of a pain than ITS in the first week of school?

Are there any parents at ITS who actually provide feedback/concerns about the first week to the administration itself? When I talk to them about it, it doesn't seem like a groundswell of opposition that they are facing.

I have, not sure if other people do. Most parents just grumble about it. But can anyone name a school with a similar policy and provide a link? First week of school, two or three half days and no aftercare for Pk3, PK4, *and* K.

Ok well, to be fair, we all thought "it [was] done" when they told us the start date the first time. And yet here we are...

They didn't even really apologize. People are trying to shuffle around camps and travel without losing a lot of money.

But what kind of solution is possible when the administration DGAF?

Both Bridges and DCB end at 1pm on Fridays. But for both, aftercare is available for all students and covers the time.

Oh and also there will be half days once a month and maaaaybe childcare. Maybe not.

In 18-19 the calendar came out in late April.

Last year, it came out in early June.

So early March is good.

Yeah, it’s frustrating that the first day moved. But DCPS keeps changing their breaks and calendar priorities, so I get that it’s hard to 1) mostly follow DCPS and 2) try to make sure the calendar is meeting the needs of the school’s stakeholders.

No horse in this race, but are you kidding me with this apologist garbage? They released a calendar. People made plans based on that calendar. If it wasn't final either because they were waiting on DCPS or key stakeholders hadn't approved then they shouldn't have published the darn thing. Not always, but sometimes in life people, companies, schools, etc. just screw up and do the wrong thing. I'm not advocating for the death penalty, but FFS, does everyone have to get a trophy?

Basically they just forgot to plan for Inauguration day as a holiday, and then added some half days because they felt like it despite having no child care plan, and that meant pushing the fall semester back. Screwing people out of their flights and camps and travel reservations is just collateral damage.

I think they're gonna hear about it on this one. I wrote back and complained, at least.

Yes. If it were just half days on Monday-Wednesday of the first week, I can tolerate it. Because it happens every year so I plan for it. But now I gotta cancel some camps and also figure out childcare for Monday and Tuesday, and then deal with half days Wednesday and Thursday. So my week at work is basically shot.
