Most of the rest we applied to.

I don't really care one way or the other that they changed the calendar. With all due respect, this is in no way a "last minute change." It's March.

You all are sounding kind of entitled.

By the way, at Inspired Teaching we don't usually air our dirty laundry on DCUM. We talk directly to each other and to the administration. If you need this much control, you may not be cut out for Charters.

Count me as another parent who hopes the administration doesn't cave on this.

But is there a charter that has half days with no aftercare? Because until ITS announces that there is aftercare, there isn't.

If the administration would respond to my emails I might be able to talk with them. The IFA is "trying" to figure out a way to work this into their obviously very busy and important meeting agenda. But they'll never stand up to the administration or question anything they're told.

This isn't about control. It's about the administration's rudeness in changing the calendar without an apology for their mistake, and for their indifference to the inconvenience they're imposing on parents. ITS already has the most inconvenient back-to-school phase-in week that I've been able to find in any DCPS elementary school that isn't Montessori. I was fine to put up with that, but this change is such a pain I feel I have to speak up.

Parents on DCUM are applying to ITS and should know that this is how the administration treats the families.

Well, this is not my family's first charter experience. It's our fourth. And I'm pleased indeed with how the administration treats families. Any time I've brought up concerns about issues that my child is facing, it's gone well. Setting the school's calendar is the school's call. Full Stop. And if YMCA doesn't provide aftercare for half days I would be shocked. And I would expect the school to change providers. The aftercare issue is honestly a non issue.

Let be very clear here. Itds did NOT release a full calendar then change it. They did changed the start date by moving it up 3 days.
So everyone complaining they "changed the calendar" you are creating a false narrative. The full calendar was not released and changed only the start date.

While I do wish families had some impute into this process I do not want them to actually change the 20-21 calendar. Cause folks are now planning around the official calendar. You know half of the parents will just take it as a chance to complain yet again.

The schools IFA and families have kind of set themselves up for this with not pushing for more involvement with funding and administrative impute. Though I caution that due to the overwhelming amount of attitudes entitlement I hear coming from so many parents.

Oh and also there will be half days once a month and maaaaybe childcare. Maybe not.

In 18-19 the calendar came out in late April.

Last year, it came out in early June.

So early March is good.

Yeah, it’s frustrating that the first day moved. But DCPS keeps changing their breaks and calendar priorities, so I get that it’s hard to 1) mostly follow DCPS and 2) try to make sure the calendar is meeting the needs of the school’s stakeholders.

No horse in this race, but are you kidding me with this apologist garbage? They released a calendar. People made plans based on that calendar. If it wasn't final either because they were waiting on DCPS or key stakeholders hadn't approved then they shouldn't have published the darn thing. Not always, but sometimes in life people, companies, schools, etc. just screw up and do the wrong thing. I'm not advocating for the death penalty, but FFS, does everyone have to get a trophy?

Basically they just forgot to plan for Inauguration day as a holiday, and then added some half days because they felt like it despite having no child care plan, and that meant pushing the fall semester back. Screwing people out of their flights and camps and travel reservations is just collateral damage.

The school didn't screw anyone of or their flights or money. You made plans before the calendar came out. You can change them or just miss 3days you pick and move on.

They emailed everyone saying explicitly that the first day would be August 31. It was in no way marked as provisional or tentative. People had no reason not to rely on that date. The school messed up and that is on them.

Honestly I know I am not going to love any school calendar. There are always days that work and don't work for different families. But at least we can plan accordingly now.
I hope all these complaints don't discourage ITDS from releasing the additional years 21-22 and 22-23 soon as dcps has done.

That’s nice that some parents are so willing to make your schedules available. Those of us who have been at the school for 5-10 years are used to the school more closely following DCPS for start and breaks. But wait—I guess we’re just not “cut out” for charter schools LOL.

I really don’t think it’s crazy to ask that schools not have half days on a Wednesday. I know that some other charters do it. My friends with kids there complain about it. The childcare costs are absurd. It is a BURDEN on families.

My DCPS PK kid’s schedule is even worse. Especially with older kid. I’d rather have at least have days than no school at all the first 3 days of school, well after camps are out.

What is the schedule exactly at your school and how is it worse?

This is hilarious to me. If this is the kind of thing you are going to get so upset over that you create a long thread on DCUM you’ve got to be kidding me. You’re spoiled. Our charter makes changes and is generally disorganized AF and this would hardly even be a problem. It’s March for gods sake. You seem to expect a super tight ship and parents taking total priority. Good luck with that.

All DCPS PK kids don’t start until 3 days after school starts for rest of students, Wed. Sept 3. For those of us with older kids that start 8/31, it’s not like we can be on vacation. We have to take 3 full days off of work just to be home with PK kids. If it were half days like ITS, at least I could try to figure out a telework situation or work half days.

Personally I prefer two full days off rather than three half days because I can use our office daycare. Also, ITS does half days for Kindergarten, which I think is really unnecessary.

I posted posted previously. I am pissed about the calendar change, but I will say that overall I generally have no issue with the admin at ITS and love the school overall. This instance of bad decision/poor planning is, in my experience there so far, an anomaly.

I don't see why your school being disorganized makes this okay. ITS is usually better than this.

Hmm. OK. So I have to take off Monday and Tuesday completely because there is no school at all those days at ITS and then there’s two days when I’m shuttling back and forth at 8:30, then 12:15, and then again at 3:30 to pick up my older kid and that’s better somehow??? Ok.
