I think regardless of if you eat some meat of are vegan or vegetarian, we should all be more aware of risks that diabetes and obesity bring and that most of these immense health problems can be solved with diet. Yesterday I saw a man at the Dr who lost his leg, and his other leg was so swollen and looked hardened. He was clearly in a lot of pain. My mother is very heavy and has diabetes. My father had diabetes 1, and low sugar that several times almost led to death. I think that no matter what works for you, me, others, we need to take this health crisis very seriously. I think plan based diet has many benefits, and is still prohibitive for many in urban deserts and even in suburbs where you have grocery stores. Look at Wegmans prices for fresh produce, not even organic one. It used to be that processed crap cost more when we had seasonal produce, now that has skyrocketed as well. I shop at Aldi a lot, and that has lowered our grocery bills significantly, but it is a mixed bag there more than not. We eat veggies and fruit, a lot of it, but it adds up and fast. Anyway, sorry for my rant, just that I was pretty shook yesterday. Many would blame the patient for it, but at this scale we need to realize that we can't keep blaming one person. Society needs to get it together.

I’m down with plant based. I haven’t eaten red or white meat for 25 years (I’m 46). But, dementia runs in my family so I’m not giving up oils (or Vit B!).

Sorry, but no...I’d rather be overweight (I’m not) than demented.

Hi, OP here. I forgot about the post and am back. I'm now down a little over 20 pounds. Going down about 1-2 pounds per week. For those who mentioned no oil, just to be clear, it's not no FAT. I'm eating plenty of fat, just in whole food form. I'm also eating lots of carbs (mostly whole grains, oat, corn, etc.), and veggies. And for protein, lots of beans and tofu.

The first 3 days were tough. All I was thinking about was pastries! Buttery yummy croissants & cakes. After that, the sugar cravings died down almost off a cliff. I just don't crave it anymore. I still eat some sugar, like in my oatmeal, but I don't eat or even crave sweets like I used to.

I have not felt hungry once. Not a single time. My clothes are now officially too big. I am sleeping so much better. My stomach problems are gone. My headaches are gone. For me, this switch is worth it.

I read about Greenfare in the Wash Post, which got me interested in the concept. I think theyre out in Reston ahd have a program that a Wash Post columnist did. I am reading Dr Fuhrman's books and following it maybe 75-80%, so not religiously, but like I mean it.

OP again, I forgot to mention that my blood pressure dropped 20 points (numerator) in 6 weeks. And my cholesterol went from over 200 to 160. Mostly, I love the way clothes fit and it doesn't hurt to wear cute shoes anymore. But healthy is good too i guess!

OP, that is great to hear! Keep at it!

OP here. Yes! Agree! I have found that canned and frozen veggies and beans are my budget friends. I try to find organiz canned beans and tomatoes on sale and buy a whole case when I do. It's cheaper to eat junk for sure, but I keep telling myself it may save money in the long run. And I'm worth it anyway, what else is more worth my money than my health? Good luck to you!!

OP here. Down another 4 pounds in 2 weeks. I've had to buy some new clothes. The scale hasn't shown much difference in the past 2 weeks but my clothes have become way too big all the sudden. Maybe more muscle? Or just cumulative? My BP is 110/70. I get my cholesterol tested again in 2 months. I am sleeping so much better, and no acid reflux. I did have a big cheating weekend with some yummy cheese and some fish. I was worried about it, but barely a blip on the scale. I love this lifestyle!

Damn, your diet must have been pretty terrible and full of crap before to be losing weight this quickly by cutting major food groups.

It was, PP, it was so terrible! I haven't cut any food groups or nutrients, just cut out the crap like you said. It is so awesome!! I am down from a size 10 to a size 6 and haven't felt hungry once.

I guess to some people they are. I was talking about nutrient categories, like carbs/fat/protein. One book I read pointed out that humans are the only animal to drink milk from another species--cows' milk and chickens' eggs are no more food groups for humans than dogs' milk and snakes' eggs. Once I read that, I was ready to let that go. My doctor is delighted with the lifestyle, and I am happy as a clam.

That's inaccurate. Many animals eat eggs and some fortunate animals know how to steal cow milk from humans. Animals' lack of dairy in their diet has more to do with the lack of thumbs than the lack of desire or lactose tolerance.

So let me get this straight. An OP comew in non- confrontationally to share her story and success, and there is a poster who is being judgmental ( you must have eaten like crap before! You're giving up good groups!). Why, exactly?
