Mostly non-existent benefits--? ?

Yes. Every study has concluded that there are a few short term benefits and virtually no long term benefits to breastfeeding. Certainly not enough to subject your baby to marijuana, which does transfer in not insignificant amounts.

Should that be no benefits to long-term breastfeeding? Because there are more than a few benefits to breastfeeding in the first few months: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/129/3/e827

That said, if OP wants to toke up that badly, she may want to investigate the medical literature. Here's some to get started: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=marijuana+in+breast+milk

For example, this one from May 2018 was a good overview of the literature since the year 2000, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29843260, and it states: infant outcomes associated with maternal cannabis use and breastfeeding were reduced muscular tonus, poor sucking, and growth delay and restriction. Mothers should be advised to refrain from substance use during the lactation period for the health and safety of their children.

Posted in teens cuz I want to hear from parents of teens who smoked pot while breastfeeding. Anicdotal but still interesting. How much did you smoke when you breastfed and how did your kids turn out?

Baby kept asking for Doritos and Taco Bell.

OP be careful. If for some reason your baby ever has to have bloodwork (and you know they test at birth for drugs), and they find drugs in your baby's system, you will have to answer to CPS. Just use formula.

Who gives a crap how that kid turned out? Seriously, is that how you plan to parent? "Cousin's sister's ex-boyfriend did it and he turned out ok" kind of parenting? Seriously?

Don't go by hearsay nonsense. Individual anecdotes are completely irrelevant to best practices.

Do - the - math.

Why do you wear a seatbelt with a kid? Because the mathematical chances of them dying are greater if they don't wear a seatbelt.
Why do you wear a helmet when playing football? Because the mathematical chances of them dying are greater if they don't wear a helmet.
Why do you not smoke when pregnant or nursing? Because the mathematical chance of something really bad happening to your kid are greater if you smoke than you do not.

Look up "women's center" and find the one nearest you to call for help finding a parenting group you can attend regularly(you can take your baby with you to many such groups). The INOVA hospital chain also has new mom groups. You need support and a safe space for asking advice. Please do not smoke pot or drink while you have a baby -- even if you do not breastfeed. You need to be 100 percent aware and sober whether or not you breastfeed.

If you are not a teen mom and posted here by mistake-- STILL do not smoke (or anything else). See the posts above. Get evaluated for post partum depression as a poster above says.

I suspect OP posted here hoping that someone would pipe up with, “yeah, I totally smoked pot while breastfeeding, and my teenager is now StuCo president, a National Merit finalist, and a 3 letter athlete. Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s harmful because my kid is proof that pot makes you perfect.”

Exactly. Stupidity loves company.

OP’s lack of understanding of science and statistics is really concerning.

Well you can get all kinds of anecdotal, "I did this (or didn't do this), and my kids turned out fine." I mean I never once had a seat-belt on when I was a kid, and I didn't die in a car accident. But were my kids belted in like NASA astronauts? Yes.

I don’t know what’s sadder- that OP is looking for validation for her daily pot habit while BF or that she is high every single day while caring for an infant. Why are morons like OP able to have kids when there are so many responsible people dying to have kids but can’t?

Yep. OP, marijuana is harmful to developing brains. So are a lot of other things like drugs, head trauma, lead, etc. Vaccines are not harmful to developing brains and help protect babies as well as society from suffering or dying from preventable diseases. Texting while driving is dangerous, and seatbelts save lives.

You can breastfeed or use formula, but you cannot breastfeed while smoking pot. You probably shouldn’t be trying to parent a newborn while smoking pot. If you are so in need of pot that you’re willing to increase your baby’s risk for developmental delays and mental health issues later in life, you should see someone.

Don't worry OP. Some pot-friendly person will soon come here and give you what you want. Some sort of solace in "I did it and I'm fine" kind of comment that you desperately seek.

But here is the rub--you already know what the answer is. That's why you came here and asked. Why?

Because You Know It Is Wrong.

You know it, deep down like you know that you love your kid. Deep down inside no matter how many pro-pot people chime in and tell you it will be alright. Deep down, you already know this is the wrong thing to be doing.

Listen to what you know to be right. Protect your child from the nonsense you read on the Internet.

Get some help and stop smoking while breastfeeding your child.

I call troll on this one.

You would hope that it is a troll for the sake of the kid. But I actually don't think it is. SO many parents use drugs while pregnant and while breastfeeding.

Ok, I will bite if this isn't a troll...

My mom had hyperemesis gravidarum, terrible time while pregnant with me. She admits to smoking a small amount near the end of her pregnancy, but not during breatsfeeding.

I am a normal functioning adult, though I have ADHD. But my father does too, as well as my brother (who my mother had an easier time, and never smoked during that pregnancy.) All this to say, I was probably genetically disposed to get ADHD, and don't suffer nearly as bad as my male family members so I don't feel there is a connection.
