Michele Rhee was the worst. City services were not great. He was arrogant. He gave many many contracts to his developer friends.

Ward 5 resident here... Adrian Fenty may not have been the most personable Mayor, or friendly but he was a good Mayor for Ward 5. He was very responsive to our needs and personally saw to it that police presence was increased. Playgrounds were rehabbed or built. The MBT was developed and he continued the progress that Mayor Williams made toward bringing more retail businesses to our ward. Crime dipped significantly and Mayor Fenty was always available to hear how things were going. He personally responded to my emails and followed-up every time.

I didn't want to be his friend. I didn't care that he didn't speak to me in passing or when I saw him at random events. What mattered to me as a voter and constituent, was that he was interested in the well-being of my Ward.

Fenty didn't "connect" well enough with the black establishment/connected cronies.

BS. He didn't bring anything new to the table. Corruption was rampant under Fenty. I worked for him. All he did was make sure Williams' plan was executed.

It really was.

I agree with the sentiment. Bowser is the pits.

It's an easy job. All you have to do is keep the Williams plan rolling and. It be so corrupt on the small things that people notice.

Bowser couldn't accomplish even that.

I truly hope this schools scandal costs her the next election.

What did you expect. Muriel is just finishing Fenty's bidding. They are best friends.

What's everyone's beef?

Side note: Marion Barry wasn't elected because he was black. He was elected again and again because he was insanely charismatic. Give the man his due.

And he had been heavily involved in the civil rights movement with King etc. No matter what he turned into, he started out with a lot of promise and many people supported him because of that. But why bring up history and facts here, it's easier to be racist and wrong.

To be fair, many on here were little during the 80's. Their view of Barry and the district are swayed by that. But yeah. History is a good thing to learn! For real.

People don't know or realize that Barry was responsible for desegregating MPD, which has been critically important for this city. If he hadn't done that, the MPD would probably be similar to Baltimore police, which is something I think all residents are glad that we don't have. MPD have their faults, but man oh man it could be so much worse and it isn't thanks to Barry.

I would be wary of using MPD and the crackhead former mayor for life in the same sentence. As someone who lived here during his sordid years as mayor, I reacall that the mayor had MPD hire officers who failed the police exam multiple times, and number of recruits even had criminal records. To MB, race was all that mattered. Shootings by D.C. Police were actually very high when MB was mayor, given MPD's lack of professionalism and the poor quality of MB's recruits then. It took two decades for most of these thugs with badges to be forced out of the department, and unfortunately, it sometimes took their arrests for other, violent crimes to remove them. Today, MPD is much more of a professional, truly diverse force. There are Asian and Latino officers, which one never saw under MB, as well military veterans.

Agreed, under MB the MPD hired a crap ton of people who had no business ever wearing the badge and gun. The MPD Recruit class of 1989-90 is truly infamous for corruption and misconduct, the MPD in only the last few years is just now starting to recover from what these thugs in uniform did to the department.
