I wouldn't assume that PP is actually a Janney parent. This exact line is posted on every Janney thread, and I strongly suspect it's someone who wants to make Janney parents appear in the worst possible light. We know there are several posters here who have made this their mission. |
Kind of like the "Whitman, Langley, or bust" poster. |
Agree with your first sentence, but you don't have any basis for your second. Or can you add some substance to your claim? |
|
What makes me sad is that 500 families (or however many there are at Janney) just raised $400k for a school already filled mostly with children who want for nothing. If I was a part of that school community, I would be ashamed that we weren't inclined to channel those fundraising efforts to an actual worthy cause. |
Oh, it's about the minor differences in last year's scores and the supposedly greater diversity. And first and foremost, of course, about your annoyance with the perceived smugness of Janney parents based on anonymous posts on this forum. Got you. |
Nope, it's the smaller class size, smaller school community, more diverse community (Janney is the least diverse of the 4 in every way), the building, the scores, and not the perceived smugness, but the fact that NO OTHER DCPS ELEMENTARY boosts themselves-I just don't get it when ALL the schools are good, and they are #4 of the 4 in my book. ...but if you need to think that is why I don't embrace the fact that your school is "the best", that's your issue. No one cares but you! |
I wouldn't go that far - not a Janney parent but at another equally overcrowded JKLMM. What our school has to do to support all those students with less DCPS funding then other schools puts an extra burden on the school. Finding the resources and the creativity of finding "space". Yes, we are very lucky to be at a JKLMM and yes we should give money to other schools. Did you know that Deal and Wilson give a certain percentage of PTA/HSA funds raised to a city-wide fund that then gets distribute to other schools in need? Might be a great idea to setup something like this at the elementary level - I believe it is is small - just 1% - but better than nothing. |
Sounds great-talk to your principal--all the principals in JKLM at least get together now and then-I bet they would embrace this idea! |
You forgot to mention that a few of the other schools have full time second teachers in those smaller classrooms, and full time art, science and PE teachers (everyone has to have FT music) which I believe Janney does not have, and yet 2 of the 4 JKLMs are half the size of Janney. |
You misread. I didn't say anywhere that Janney is the best, nor do I think that. I don't even have kids at the school. I believe all of these schools are great and each have their strengths and weaknesses. And it's kind laughable that you think no other school has boosters on this forum, you must really be focusing on the Janney threads for some strange reason. And then you just assume that every post that gives an obnoxious one liner about the school's superiority was actually written by a Janney parent and not by a troll who wants to fire up people like you. How many Janney parents have you heard boosting like this in real life? All the ones that I have met (and I have several friends with kids there) have been really nice and down to earth people. |
I'm the PP who's the Janney mom. This exactly ! Nobody at Janney speaks like this. But if it makes you feel better to think we are smug etc... it's more about you than us anyway. |
The presumption, which is false, is that these schools do not already do things to support other schools. Mann has a partner school in DC to which it sends supplies. For Valentine's Day, every student at the other DC school received at least three books from families at Mann. Following the floods in Louisiana, Mann donated dozens of boxes of books, stuffed animals and cards for students at effected schools. There was enough to fill a FedEx truck. I have no reason to think activities like this are unique. |
Janney mom here. Janney also has a partner school in DC to which they send books and supplies. Apart from sending books and supplies, and auction money, it'd be interesting to brainstorm what else could be done. May be some kind of student or teacher exchanges? |
Please have your principal talk to the principal of the partner school and find out what they need. Or have the Janney PTO ask the president of the partner school PTO. Did they ask for these supplies? Maybe what they really needed was money to buy extra uniforms for the supply room? A washer/dryer for families to use as has been installed in the basement of Jefferson Academy? Do they need money to purchase snacks to augment what is provided for school lunch or after care? Does their library need books? Computers? But honestly I think a check for $1000-5000 to the other school's PTA is likely to be most appreciated. |
