S/O What is it about disposing of dog poop in your trash can that upsets you

Anonymous
Because sometimes the bags have holes, or if I put something heavy in my trashcan, the bag can break open. It's feces. It's disgusting, and it stinks.

I legitimately wouldn't care because I feel like the grand total of time I spend near my trash can smelling is is like, at the absolute max like a minute or two a week. That's why I'm confused, I don't spend anywhere near enough time next to my outdoor trash can to even contemplate what specific products are producing what specific smells. I kind of have a hard time imagine the person who does.

LOL. You must have been raised to not mind the 2 minutes of bad smell per week. I prefer to not smell any gross smells from the trash can. And so, I double and triple bag things. I freeze things like bones, skins etc., that can stinkup the trashcan, in a ziplock bag and take it out on trash day. I rinse out my trash can with a hose and dry it before taking it inside the garage.

And I would be very offended if someone threw their dog poop in my trash. Now, if they double bagged it, put it in a ziplock bag and then put in a contractor grade trashbag and tied it so that not even one wiff of stench escaped, I would allow them to put in my trashcan when it was out on the curb, before the trash was picked, on trash pick up day.

Oh, and then I would also expect them to rinse out my trash can and Lysol it.

I guess the reason I'm confused is that I just don't spend that much time next to my outdoor trash can and it always smells like SOMETHING bad. It holds trash. Perhaps poop just is equal to me on the bad smells of rotting food/whatever else is in there.

Like I just envision all these bitter people opening their trash cans and sniffing angrily to see if they detect poop in the myriad of other gross oders. Like for the probably 30 aggregate seconds a week I am close enough to smell it, I am just assuming it smells bad because its trash.

We don't keep our outdoor trash can outdoors all the time. It mostly stays in our garage and goes out on trash night, and comes back in that evening. We hose it out periodically. So yes, I really do care if it smells extra bad, and I would be highly irritated if I brought the can back in not realizing that you threw your dog shit in there. To those of us who don't handle your dog's poop on a daily basis, trust me- it smells way worse than ordinary trash. And no- I'm not a bitter person just because I'm not offering up my trash can as your pet's toilet. Would you think it appropriate for me to poop in a bag and throw it in your trash?

I think this is the same as the diaper question and perhaps it's because I live in a townhouse-y area where there aren't a lot of garages that I just don't hang out near my trash can that often. I'd actually bet you like 100 bucks that you could poop in bags and put them in my trash can for months and I'd never even notice.

Please get off this idea of "hanging out by the trash can". Not a single person has said they object because they like to sit by their trash can and inhale deeply. For example I said that we keep our trash can in the garage, so if you throw your dog poop in there while the can is outside, and I unwittingly bring it inside thinking it is empty, it will stink up my entire garage. Other people have other valid reasons- i.e., not wanting to accidentally touch or squish your dog poop bag.

This really is not that hard to understand.

Did you read my response? I noted that where I live most people don't have garages. The garage thing makes sense to me. Someone rooting around with their bare hands in their trash can is kind of baffling/gross to me.

NP - what if it's not dog poop? What if it's an empty disposable coffee cup, or a gum wrapper...something like that? Are people still annoyed by that?

I am a dog owner who picks up after my dogs and who does not put the bags in your trash can because I've seen enough complaints about people who hate it but I genuinely don't understand WHY people hate it. Its your outdoor trash can. I never even look in my outdoor trashcan, certainly not closely enough to have noticed a rogue dog poop bag.

Genuinely curious because I feel like the people who DO do this are actually trying to be conscientious dog owners but people seem to get SUPER bent about it.

1. Poop smells worse than regular trash, especially in warm weather.

2. Poop bags can have holes or break if something heavy is thrown on top of it.

3. Not all garbage cans are kept outside. Many sit in garages until garbage day.

4. Trashcans do not always get completely emptied.

Just a couple of reasons that I can think of off the top of my head. Are none of these legitimate reasons, OP?

You said that there are not many garages, not that there are none. Handling dog poop on a daily basis is kind of baffling/gross to me, so it appears we like to do things differently. And that's why you should keep your dog poop to yourself.

Yep, I would still be annoyed, because the trash guys basically just upend the trash can into their truck. Random loose things are likely to fall on the yard, into the street, or remain stuck on the bottom of the trash can until the next pickup. Is it really that hard to be considerate?

I've also said twice that I don't do this I just think people who are bent out of shape by it are being a little dramatic. Don't worry, my dog's poop has never entered your trash can. In alexandria (where i live) there are tons of public trash cans so its really not a big deal.

To another PP I think I get it more with the trash cans that are pulled into garages. When I was growing up we pulled our trash cans to the bottom of the driveway but didn't put them in the garage, for the exact reason that trash cans are smelly. I can appreciate other people not doing that.

why don't dog owners flush collected dog poops down their toilet? serious question.

Because you still then have to deal with a poopy bag. Flushing just means MORE exposure to the dog poop, not less. And it means traipsing it into your house (which I think even us gross dog owners view as a step too far). My dad did have this claw thing he used on my dog when I was a kid where he would take it to the toilet afterward but something like that is not really practical on an urban walk.

Because wastewater treatment plants are set up for human waste, not animal waste.

As a dog owner who picks up and double-bags the dog poop before putting it in my trash can, I can say that over time the poop makes your trashcan smell even when double bagged. I wouldn't toss my poop bags in someone else's trash cans for that reason.

Same- I wouldn't ever throw my dog's poop in someone can (unless the trash pick up was coming down the street and I knew it would be hauled off immediately- rarely happens).

My neighbors do not pick up after their dogs and I do and put it in their cans. They don't care about others, why should I care about them?
