Because it stinks! I mean.... duh. Who wants to open their trash can and smell dog shit?
I guess the reason I'm confused is that I just don't spend that much time next to my outdoor trash can and it always smells like SOMETHING bad. It holds trash. Perhaps poop just is equal to me on the bad smells of rotting food/whatever else is in there. Like I just envision all these bitter people opening their trash cans and sniffing angrily to see if they detect poop in the myriad of other gross oders. Like for the probably 30 aggregate seconds a week I am close enough to smell it, I am just assuming it smells bad because its trash.
We don't keep our outdoor trash can outdoors all the time. It mostly stays in our garage and goes out on trash night, and comes back in that evening. We hose it out periodically. So yes, I really do care if it smells extra bad, and I would be highly irritated if I brought the can back in not realizing that you threw your dog shit in there. To those of us who don't handle your dog's poop on a daily basis, trust me- it smells way worse than ordinary trash. And no- I'm not a bitter person just because I'm not offering up my trash can as your pet's toilet. Would you think it appropriate for me to poop in a bag and throw it in your trash?
I think this is the same as the diaper question and perhaps it's because I live in a townhouse-y area where there aren't a lot of garages that I just don't hang out near my trash can that often. I'd actually bet you like 100 bucks that you could poop in bags and put them in my trash can for months and I'd never even notice.
Please get off this idea of "hanging out by the trash can". Not a single person has said they object because they like to sit by their trash can and inhale deeply. For example I said that we keep our trash can in the garage, so if you throw your dog poop in there while the can is outside, and I unwittingly bring it inside thinking it is empty, it will stink up my entire garage. Other people have other valid reasons- i.e., not wanting to accidentally touch or squish your dog poop bag. This really is not that hard to understand.
Did you read my response? I noted that where I live most people don't have garages. The garage thing makes sense to me. Someone rooting around with their bare hands in their trash can is kind of baffling/gross to me.
You said that there are not many garages, not that there are none. Handling dog poop on a daily basis is kind of baffling/gross to me, so it appears we like to do things differently. And that's why you should keep your dog poop to yourself.
I've also said twice that I don't do this I just think people who are bent out of shape by it are being a little dramatic. Don't worry, my dog's poop has never entered your trash can. In alexandria (where i live) there are tons of public trash cans so its really not a big deal. To another PP I think I get it more with the trash cans that are pulled into garages. When I was growing up we pulled our trash cans to the bottom of the driveway but didn't put them in the garage, for the exact reason that trash cans are smelly. I can appreciate other people not doing that.
