S/O What is it about disposing of dog poop in your trash can that upsets you

I think for the most part, people should be in the habit of disposing of all of their own waste in their own trash bins, or in public trash bins. Loose, unsecured trash articles are far more likely to end up as litter in the neighborhood, and you're leaving someone to pick up your mess because you couldn't be bothered to dispose of it properly.

I don't care if anyone uses my garbage can. If you use my recycling can I may beat you. I often don't have enough room for all my recycling!

I guess the reason I'm confused is that I just don't spend that much time next to my outdoor trash can and it always smells like SOMETHING bad. It holds trash. Perhaps poop just is equal to me on the bad smells of rotting food/whatever else is in there.

Like I just envision all these bitter people opening their trash cans and sniffing angrily to see if they detect poop in the myriad of other gross oders. Like for the probably 30 aggregate seconds a week I am close enough to smell it, I am just assuming it smells bad because its trash.

We don't keep our outdoor trash can outdoors all the time. It mostly stays in our garage and goes out on trash night, and comes back in that evening. We hose it out periodically. So yes, I really do care if it smells extra bad, and I would be highly irritated if I brought the can back in not realizing that you threw your dog shit in there. To those of us who don't handle your dog's poop on a daily basis, trust me- it smells way worse than ordinary trash. And no- I'm not a bitter person just because I'm not offering up my trash can as your pet's toilet. Would you think it appropriate for me to poop in a bag and throw it in your trash?

I think this is the same as the diaper question and perhaps it's because I live in a townhouse-y area where there aren't a lot of garages that I just don't hang out near my trash can that often. I'd actually bet you like 100 bucks that you could poop in bags and put them in my trash can for months and I'd never even notice.

Please get off this idea of "hanging out by the trash can". Not a single person has said they object because they like to sit by their trash can and inhale deeply. For example I said that we keep our trash can in the garage, so if you throw your dog poop in there while the can is outside, and I unwittingly bring it inside thinking it is empty, it will stink up my entire garage. Other people have other valid reasons- i.e., not wanting to accidentally touch or squish your dog poop bag.

This really is not that hard to understand.

Did you read my response? I noted that where I live most people don't have garages. The garage thing makes sense to me. Someone rooting around with their bare hands in their trash can is kind of baffling/gross to me.

You said that there are not many garages, not that there are none. Handling dog poop on a daily basis is kind of baffling/gross to me, so it appears we like to do things differently. And that's why you should keep your dog poop to yourself.

I've also said twice that I don't do this I just think people who are bent out of shape by it are being a little dramatic. Don't worry, my dog's poop has never entered your trash can. In alexandria (where i live) there are tons of public trash cans so its really not a big deal.

To another PP I think I get it more with the trash cans that are pulled into garages. When I was growing up we pulled our trash cans to the bottom of the driveway but didn't put them in the garage, for the exact reason that trash cans are smelly. I can appreciate other people not doing that.

Ha, ok...says the person who keeps portraying everyone else as a "bitter" person who "sniffs angrily" at the edge of their trashcan in an attempt to detect rogue dog poop. Look, you started the thread, and you got your answers.

1. I hate all dogs including your special larla.
2. I do not want your dog crapping in my yard where my kid plays. Can he crap in your yard for you to step in?
3. I paid for the trash cans, trash pick up and they are on private property. You have no business using my trash cans on my property.
4. Out trash collectors only grab large bags. They do not dump the cans. Anything small gets left will we put it in a big bag. I do not want to be dealing with your old dog poop.
5. It stinks.
6. Did I mention my dislike for dogs, especially on my property?

Almost none of these correspond to the question I asked but thanks for letting us all know how you feel about dogs. And I am mostly referring to trash cans that are out at the curb, not on your private property (but fine, the trash collector thing seems like a valid reason so thanks for illuminating me). As for my dog pooping on your lawn, serious question, what do you do about all the other animals that poop/pee on your lawn (birds/deer/foxes/cats/squirrels)?

Fittingly, I just went outside after the trash collectors had come through to take in my trash cans and noticed one smelled like death. Sure enough, I open it up to find a bag of dog poop adhered to the bottom, leaking a congealed puddle of brown feces all over the bottom. Just had to take a hose and bleach to it to get rid of the smell, not to mention the fun of rebagging the offending poop bag so it wouldn't happen again. Came inside, told my 6-year-old what I'd just had to do, and his response was, "Why would someone do that to us? Why don't they take it to their own house to throw away?"

People who throw their poop in other people's cans, my six-year-old has a better sense of manners and common decency than you do. Grow up.

Unless you live in an apartment and have to let your dog poop on public property (definitely not private), there is no reason your dog needs to poop while out for a walk. Walk your dog before you feed it or after it has already pooped. The purpose of the walk should be for exercise, not pooping and peeing all over the neighborhood and killing the greenery. The majority of dog walkers I encounter are not exercising their pets. Rather, they are walking at a snail's pace while their dogs pee on everything in sight to mark territory.

You do not have a dog, especially a male dog, if you think you can control when they poop/pee.

+1. That's not how dogs work. Once I learn to speak dog I'll be sure to tell them not to pee or poop in your yard. Fwiw we always pick up our dog poop and dispose of it at our house.

We always put liners in our trash cans. If there is a bag of stinky poop in there I have to pick it up first. Gross! Plus, it's my trash can!!!

Because wastewater treatment plants are set up for human waste, not animal waste.

LOL. What? You think a wastewater treatment plant can't handle dog poop?

We put our trash cans in the garage and if you drop your dog poop in it - Yes it smells awful, and heat makes it worse then the house starts to smell. Don't be so selfish- take your poop home to your own can!

This is the definitive answer.

I don't care if your garbage smells like roses. Keep your hands off my trash can.
