Ummm -- where did I say or suggest the system is rigged? And how do you know what's going on at my child's school? |
Interesting.. we also came from Beauvoir into NCS and my daughter is happy there but our reaction as parents has been meh. |

If you add 3 years of the extra tuition they will have a surplus of 2.4 million. If they cut the advancement budget for those same 3 years they would save 3 million add the 2 together and you have the 5 million they need for the library.
It's a strategy |
| If the school is increasing the number of enrolled students to offset the cost of the library I am fine with that strategy - just wish they had done so more evenly across each grade. I think the reality may be that fewer students in that class who applied out decided to leave. |
| It's all about the library. Everyone Pony Up! so we can stop hearing, hearing and hearing even more about the library. |
| All these theories about increased enrollment are silly. There is a school wide limit to how many girls they can enroll. They are now over that limit by a few. It affects future class sizes negatively. |
| So my kid will have less of a chance next year because they over subscribed this year's 9th grade? That sucks. |
LOL at this. DD and her BFF arted ways after 8th grade, where DD stayed in our neighborhood public high school in NOVA and her BFF went off to NCS. Four years later, the girls ended up at UVA together after the BFF -- with much higher than a 3.2 -- was rejected by all the Ivies including her first choice, Penn. And our DD is just as "poised and confident" coming out of public school. Don't buy into the hype. |
this is absolutely not true |
| I know some people want a Big 3 because they think it will increase their chances of getting into an Ivy. I'm sending my daughters to a Big 3 because I know how hard it is to get into HPY and their chances are .01 while competing against the very best AROUND the WORLD. So rather than thinking about college I want to make sure they get a solid education every step of the way. Even if they end up at UVA with other public school students it doesn't matter. I provided them the best that I could and they're going to school with kids who will go to HPY. BTW, there are public school students at HPY too. If you have the money it's not a waste. Its only a waste if you buy a Birkin bag. |
Problematic in what way? |
Yes, $160,000 is a lot to gamble for a spot at schools that only accept about 5-8%. If you're sending them to private for this reason I'd think twice. |
This is absolutely true, I know NCS extremely well... Just looking at the pure ivies plus stanford there is 1 stanford 1 brown 1 yale 4 dartmouth 5 cornell 4 penn 2 princeton... so it is 18 not 20, but 18 out of 78 to ivies. Then the "non ivy ivies" there are 4 at Amherst, 2 to Northwestern, I think the final UChiacgo was only 3 since students got off wait lists elsewhere and 5 at my last count to UVA, 2 to Davidson, 1 to Duke, 1 to Georgetown... so that is 33 of 78 to the very top schools if you count places like Davidson and Duke as very top. |
Also 5 to UMichigan, 1 to Notre Dame, 1 to Vassar which may be a slight level below. |
I know YOU. You are a type. And I do feel comfortable opining that your kids' private school does not have English and history teachers who refuse to give out As categorically. Because that's an indefensible position and they'd be fired. Occam's razor: there are tough graders and your kid didn't get an A and YOU (and perhaps other whiny parents) have concocted a tale that the teachers don't believe in using part of the grade scale. |
