do you ever bend the rules so your kid can just feel cool

OP, this might be a compromise.

Can you take the top to someplace like Target that sells separates and get a matching or coordinating bottom in a more appropriate cut for her age? She can still wear the cute top, but she won't need to shave/wax anything more than the typical bikini line (nothing above the suit line)?

That way, both your daughter and dad win a little and give a little.

A different bottom would change the whole look of the suit from sexy and daring to cute and flirty.

OP, I totally get it. I have that slightly awkward kid too, though a bit younger. I would do exactly the same thing.
And based on my recent experience, your 13-year old daughter will be one of the more modestly attired kids at that party!

+1 My DD prefers to wear a bikini top with board shorts.

NP here. So how would you have handled the situation, you of the superior parenting skills? Do tell.

We're waiting.

This is what all the 13 year olds wore in the 80s. Mine was peach and blue. Course, we would keep t-shirts on over them most of the time....

OP at 13 what does you daughters shape look like?

I think it's a cute suit, I can see where some PP's think it's sexy.

Last summer I went to the beach with my 13 year old niece. She's pretty young and naïve for her age, and when we were down at the beach I was surprised at the figure she was developing, only as far as I thought her body was more advanced than her ability to grasp other people's intentions and comments and guide herself safely down that path. The gross old man (easily over 70) sitting in the chairs next to us kept talking to her, and I wanted to say, "Hey old man, she's 13!"

I guess what I'm tying to say is if you're uncomfortable because the suit is more sexy on her, and you're not sure how she'll handle that attention that speaks to me for another shopping trip. Not because she should edit her clothing choices for others.

I really don't think that bathing suit on a skinny gawky 13 year old would look sexy.

If I'd tried to wear that at 13 everyone would have laughed at me. I was really skinny and undeveloped.

I have a 12 yr old who is tiny so can't imagine her having a woman's body. That is a bikini for a woman, not one for a girl. I do break rules for DD but I would not have given in on this particular issue.

Former MS principal here. This is fine. She will not stand out.

+1. Not sure who mentioned a tankini but please don't try to make a 13 year old wear a tankini to a pool party. If you can find a better cut bottom, the top will be totally fine.

I was 13 in the 80s and neither I nor any of my classmates was wearing that.

It is fine, op. Stop second guessing yourself.

I think it's a cute swimsuit. Assuming she isn't super busty and curvaceous she should look cute in it.

Do get her back up one for more active play though,
