do you ever bend the rules so your kid can just feel cool

Anonymous
On vacation our kids get a daily soda or a virgin strawberry daiquiri. They think it's cool. We don't buy soda at home so it's special. NBD.

As a European, I confess you prudish Americans amaze me. What's wrong with this swimsuit, for crying out loud?! It's super cute, and not sexy at all.

The problem is the cut of the bottoms vs her age.

If it still had the side straps but was cut higher over the front pubic area, fine.

If it had the same cut, but no side straps, okay.

But the combination of the two just makes it a little too string bikini for a middle school child.

Personally, I feel that any bathing suit that requires hair removal from the upper region is skimpy. I agree it's a cute bathing, but I disagree that it's not sexy.

I agree.

OP, I feel sorry for your daughter. You need to get some parenting skills. Fast.

For her age, no. Your husband knows what the boys will have in mind.

So what? That's the boys' problem, not hers. She shouldn't have to cover up to make the boys (or their parents) more comfortable.

Separately, you should talk to her about her body and appropriate boundaries around it, but that's not a reason not to wear this swim suit.

Thank you. What a girl wears should never be dictated by what boys might "have in mind."

It isn't that skimpy. But I'm not really understanding the rules to which you are referring. Do you belong to some religious organization that prohibits? Or are you just saying that you are not a completely thoughtless, inflexible parent?

Your husband has NO idea what its like to take a 13 yr old swimsuit shopping multiple weekends in a row. NO.FREAKING.IDEA. Its fine OP. Not ideal but such is life. As you creep into the teenage years you really have to be wise and strategically pick your battles.

Good point. I don't see where there was an established "no bikini" rule. It might be a little more mature than mom was thinking she'd pick out, but that's going to happen more and more as they get older. There's no rules to been, just maturity to accept and allowing your daughter to feel confident with her body.

Have you ever spent 3 hours in a mall with a 13 year old girl?

OP here. Yes this. I am not a fan of the true triangle bikini and would of preferred a more sporty two piece or even maybe a halter.

Where is the rule????

And to answer the question: Yes. I've "bent rules" as they've gotten older, but I prefer to see it as "increasing priviledges." Books that were off limits at 12, they can read at 15. Later bedtimes, more screen times, etc., but only as they demonstrate they can take those on without letting other things slide. It's more than letting them be cool; it's letting them grow up.

It is a halter. And the top is the modest part.

No. Absolutely Not.

My husband would shit his pants if I bought that for our daughter.
