Transforming America: Politics and Culture During the Reagan Years. Good read. Contradicts your point. |
That's an author's opinion--not the words of the President. |
I didn't say I read it, nor was I the one who wrote the initial post for this subtopic. - just another lazy DCUM poster Folks, this "debate" serves no purpose. Years ago, I remember having discussions with cousins in Italy who had a love/hate with the US. They love what we have to offer but hate our politics. It's a lose-lose. We are viewed as arrogant, yet the first one the world looks to for support. We embrace women's rights yet these rights infringe upon the rights of others. (You've seen the debates btw. covering according to Islamic tradition and being "free.") We accept immigrants ("Give me your tired, your poor . . . "), yet we can barely keep up with our "homegrown" poverty. We provide an education for all. However, NCLB and Common Core and PARCC haven't exactly leveled the playing field. In fact, Pearson is laughing all the way to the bank. Some of us DO love this country. But the question is - Which part? (or parts?) b/c what I love may not be what you love And at this point, I doubt either side will see eye-to-eye. |
What? |
What's your definition of women's rights? If I call my self a feminist but I don't support a women's right to cover, how do you view me? If I work FT and love my career, but I can't stand a women's choice to stay home, how do you view me? Who's right? |
| So people who spent their childhood abroad cannot be like us? They do not lime the US? What about Foreign Service kids? Army brats? Not patriotic enough for some? |
So someone who transforms the country is different in what way from someone who wants to transform the country? Is it any less serious to achieve the goal than to aim for it? |
| He came across as a senile idiot. I really admired him at one time, now he comes across as another racist, hating Republican that's help to flush the entire party down the shitter. It'll be a long long time before I ever vote for that party again. |
|
How is what he said possibly racist?
He is blaming Obama's wack job, academic, commie mom, not his race. |
| With each passing year, it seems that the nickname "Il Duce" fits Guiliani more and more. |
From my experiences, family and friends who spent summers in another country (the home country of a parent), for example, are the most critical of the US. |

He spoke the truth. I agree that through his actions, Obama has shown that he does not love the United States.
You don't have to like it, but watch "America: Imagine a World Without Her" - then try to make the case that Obama does not agree with most or all of the critics of America portrayed in that film. Giuliani is a moderate guy. He stayed with gay friends during his separation preceding his divorce; there's a famous photo of him in drag. Bloomberg was essentially his equal in running NYC (and he worked miracles in reducing the murder rate -primarily among people of color BTW). He is more of an independant like Bloomberg than any leading Republican. The reason people suddenly hate moderate Giuliani is that he has exposed Obama as a radical. Look at the ghost-writer of Obama's book: Willialm Ayers. Can anyone seriously believe that Ayers does not hate America? That Ayer's wife, Bernadine, does not hate America? Don't hate Giuliani for speaking the truth. |
-his mom and her parents. Look into it. |
I agree that Rudy's comments are not exactly racist, but he does play the theme of "foreign-ness" when it comes to Obama (doesn't love America, doesn't understand our country, etc.). There have been strains of this in the GOP for a long time -- Barrack Hussein Obama, the birth certificate obsession, suggestions that Obama is really a Muslim. It's still surprising that a cross-dressing, proudly Italian-American washed up politician would play up the foreigner angle. |
