What needs to change in our culture for rape to be less common on college campuses?

I wasn't involved in frats/sororities so I don't know this, but:

Isn't there an adult around?

If not, shouldn't there be? In the dorms, there are R.A.s. Just some sort of hierarchy. I think in general, young men respond to male hierarchy--whether in the military, law firms, gangs etc. If there was an alpha male, an older dad-like alpha male--I bet it would help keep these guys under control.

In not just humans, but some other species, the adult or older male has this role. With herd animals, always hear about it in terms of mating rights, but there are other functions of being the dominant male. "Dominant" doesn't actually mean dominant over females; it means dominant over other males. For example, elephants are like this too. The old bull elephant(s) keep the "teenage" elephants in line; keep them "socialized." The problems with many young "gangs" of male elephants have to do with that their leaders have been killed (for the long tusks), and the juveniles have no guidance and become a destructive force.

For most young men, it is sufficient to explain to them that they can't just do what they want to other human beings, so that when they go out into the world they act like civilized people.

I am incredulous that someone would actually believe that there would be an adult "supervising" a frat party. Did you actually go to college with Greek life, PP?

DP, but I get the point that college males who live in an environment where there is an RA who has been tasked with being responsible or, potentially, with faculty "masters" in a residential college setting may behave differently than those who think Blotto in a fraternity is a respectable role model.

Unfortunately, no. This is a thought I often had during my undergrad years. I was much like OP, at a very similar school (quite possible the same one), and would watch the out-of-control behavior every weekend and think that the adults all left campus on Friday at 5, leaving us at the mercy of crazy drunks. I don't think the faculty or administrators really had any clue what campus life was like from Friday night to Monday morning.

We have to systematically change our society from thinking that women exist for men. That they aren't as valuable as men and that men can take what they want. That won't happen in my lifetime.

The problem starts at home, with this generation of "adults" who have raised and are now teaching these students.

Too many trophies, too many "gifted" kids, too many snowflakes, too much emphasis on popularity/ looks/ beauty at the expense of thinking and studying. This includes letting students go to (formerly prestigious) colleges to major in those heavy-lifting subjects like women's studies, sports marketing, general communications and the like. If these people had to really work in college (any organic chemistry majors out there?), they wouldn't have time for a lot of this.

Our entire culture needs to change. Specifically the idea that women's bodies belong to anyone else, be it their husband, boyfriend, or just to the culture, so that we all have a right to look at and comment on women's bodies in a way we dont with men. If we can begin to realize that women's bodies belong to them and them ALONE, then we will stop this odd resentment and feeling of being robbed that men get when women deny them sex.
