What needs to change in our culture for rape to be less common on college campuses?

Well one thing is to make Greek life dry. The drinking age is 21, on average 3/4 of the undergrad population can't legally drink.

Too many men feel sex is a free for all. There are no obligations to worry about. They can have sex drunk or high with any girl. They don't have to get married or worry about pregnancy because the girl will be on the pill or get an abortion. Now with the hookup culture they don't even have to talk to her the next day. It is no wonder some of these guys feel they can just grab a girl and rape her.

This is insulting to men. Men are not animals. We've created a social environment where certain predatory men are coddled and protected, and something has to be done about that.

+100
So sick of people blaming all men.

It doesn't ever seem like sexual assualters are ever punished (thinking like what happens in the military, on the office environment, for example) particularly on college campuses.

Students are expelled for cheating and smoking pot, yet when was the lat time someone was kicked out for rape?

Is it harder to prove? Is it bc the students don't sign codes of conduct?

If only it were that easy to get sex, (it's not).

I am not sure where these fictional depictions of college guys and men in general are coming from but a lot of it is hyped of trolling IMO.

So that people who would blame the victim will instead understand that a woman doesn't charge a man with rape because she regrets sleeping with him. That would be great -- I don't know how that theory manages to survive, but it needs to be squashed.

That's not what I took away from PPs comment. At all.

When would you kick them out? Once they are convicted in court or when they are accused?

I completely agree, but can someone explain why this happens? Why are the schools involved at all? Or by schools, is the reference to campus police? If a rape occurs on campus property are local police prohibited from acting because the property is considered private?

It happens because of the fact that most rapes are not reported to police because of the victim's fear of harsh treatment. So colleges tried to establish a middle ground to encourage reporting (for the safety of victims and others) but it is hard to have "rape reporting light."

Easy. Teach our sons not to rape. I know I am.

Too many trophies, too many "gifted" kids, too many snowflakes, too much emphasis on popularity/ looks/ beauty at the expense of thinking and studying. This includes letting students go to (formerly prestigious) colleges to major in those heavy-lifting subjects like women's studies, sports marketing, general communications and the like. If these people had to really work in college (any organic chemistry majors out there?), they wouldn't have time for a lot of this.

Genius! Why doesn't everybody just switch majors and then there's be no more rape!

I'm guessing you don't have a doctorate in common sense, PP.

I see a nerve was hit. Sorry your "degree" didn't get you a good job, like everyone told you it would because you are so smart!

A nerve was hit, not because of my employment (which is just fine and I have a BA), but because you think that if men have time on their hands then they will become rapists. They become rapists because their parents and teachers and culture shows them that women's bodies exist for their pleasure. They become rapists because woman aren't valued as human beings and are seen as only contributing to men's sexual gratification.

Oh, believe me, it's not what I got from it, either. I am just spending my time coming up with novel ways of pointing out that a lot of the suggestions here are shining examples of victim blaming and rape culture generally, so they are the opposite of solutions.

It's not victim blaming to expect women to be part of the solution.
