There are just so many seats available in the Ivys, and while I think Harvard should step of its game where Asian admission is concerned, there is absolutely no reason why all ethnic groups who can produce the credentials shouldn't have a shot.
There are equally smart non-Asian kids who are not getting admitted because an equally smart Asian kid got that spot. It does work both ways whether you believe it or not. |
So what besides standardized test scores? Surely you don't mean to include grades, which obviously mean different things from different schools. Really you do you just mean standardized test scores. Which completely ignores the disparate impact that those tests have on different populations. |
I'm not so sure subsequent lawsuits will be overwhelmingly successful. I think some concessions will be made though. |
My view is that the racial composition of the students should not be a factor. The emphasis should be on the applicants who are the most qualified ...... and the most qualified does not mean merely those with the best test scores. But introducing criteria that has the ulterior motive of inhibiting any racial group is problematical. I recall the time not so long ago when Asians in the job market were viewed as being excellent technically but did not have "leadership" qualities. This is an argument that is not used for the most part today as Asians have ended up in senior management positions including heading some major corporations and also achieving leadership roles in other facets of life. As far as Harvard bringing out the big guns from their law school, you are making the assumption that these "big guns" agree with Harvard's current approach of limiting admissions when it comes to Asians. What I see as the main benefit of the lawsuit is that the very publicity will compel colleges like Harvard to take a more objective approach and focus less on a quota system. I also think that given the current composition of the SCOTUS and its previous opinions, it will be less than sympathetic to any arbitrary limitation of admissions with regard to any racial group. |
No school is giving up their athletic recruitment. Even HYP has a healthy respect for sports though Princeton is so-so athletically. Okay, Princetonians, bring it on! ![]() |
I guess the nba and nfl..you know NATIONAL basketball association and NATIONAL football league should change their names to negro basketball association and negro football league. Afterall each league is 75% and 67% black respectively. In a country that looks and will never look anything like that. QUOTAS IN SPORTS, NOW! |
ucla and berkeley recruit stronger athletes than HYP and show no racial preference at the same time. It can be done (i know you will say that they offer scholarships, but even without scholarships, the applicant pool at ivies is so strong that they can do this as well). |
cal and ucla don't go by just on test scores. |
If those are the most qualified applicants, why wouldn't it be? |
The universities are currently deciding which applicants have the best qualifications...so sick of this mentality that everything should always be based on the results of some exam that they can get the answer key to in advance if they pay off the right people. |
Why shouldn't colleges give preference to legacy, development, or athletic applicants? Should they also not give preference to the oboe or tuba player they need? Top schools want a diverse group of students, in every sense of the word. These schools want a vibrant group of student who bring a plethora of skills and talents to the table. They know students learn from each other as much as they do from professors in the classroom. Meeting and getting to know and respect people who are very different from yourself is a fundamental part of the college years and has effects far into one's adult life; admissions offices want to put together an entering class that will enrich the experience of all the students. |
wait...you are claiming that kids can get an SAT answer key by paying people? |
So then you are cool with HYP being 97% Asian American? Aren't those universities supposed to represent the best and the brightest of ALL Americans (and international students, etc. etc.). |
Ha! Then bring some talent to the league just like the talent applies to Ivys. That is the argument of the Asians. They are super talented so there should be more slots available to them. Of course, white men can jump. So, where are they? |
After all, the NATIONAL Hockey league is 90% white in a country that and will never look anything like that. QUOTAS IN SPORTS, NOW! ![]() |
