Actually, there is a suspicion that UVA has a quota on Asian Americans as well based on how number of acceptances from TJ decreased in line with increase in Asian American students at TJ for the past 5 years.

uva def has an asian quota - just like it has a nova quota.

the thing is - the asian population in va is a much more recent phenomenon compared to the north east/above mason-dixon line so it'll be interesting to see what happens as more and more asians apply to uva.

I think uva would allow itself to go to 20% asian but not more than that (its at 12 right now).

It's all a big conspiracy -- except it's probably not. Despite the volume of TJ kids who go there, UVA is not an extension of TJ, and getting into TJ is not supposed to be a guarantee of getting into UVA. Perhaps fewer TJ kids appeared like they might be a good fit for UVA, or that they might actually go there. Perhaps, TJ was hurt for the same reason many NOVA kids have been denied admission -- there are just too many smart kids up here and UVA has to take a certain proportion of kids from the whole state. Why should there be a quota for NOVA kids, but not for TJ? Times change and with the rise in population the number of brilliant kids in NOVA who aren't at TJ (and aren't Asian) is on the rise too. I don't think UVA is in the business of turning away kids it really wants to have and thinks will add something to the campus community however that is defined in a particular year.

One other thing: don't forget Asian Americans also compete against overseas Asians who pay full fare -- as do all students for that matter. I'd have a bigger beef against kids who can barely handle the language taking a spot, but with economics the way they are, get used to it. Intense competition from everywhere is going to be a fact of life at nationally recognized universities in a global world. Perhaps TJ kids who were praising the value of failure to kids who didn't get into TJ in a recent article, can take what they say to heart. Getting into all these colleges is tough, period. Rather than spending all this time trying to change admission rules to what suits a particular group, why don't people concentrate on making themselves the best they can possibly be and let their brilliance make another school great?

Why don't we concentrate on eliminating racial discrimination as well as promoting "making themselves the best they can possibly be". All of the applicants should compete with International students not just Asian American applicants. The problem is, Asian Americans are prevented from "making themselves the best they can possibly be" due to racial discrimination in college admissions and discrimination in employment/promotion.

UNC's quotas require 80% of the seats come from in-state. Within that 80%, each of NC's 100 counties has to be represented. I don't see why UNC is a part of that suit, since its formula ensures that the taxpayers who support the school get a shot at going there.

I know this will seem like a strange comment, but in addition to the usual idea that immigrants work harder, has any one thought about the diet of these groups in comparison with the typical american diet? The groups mentioned do not eat a lot of beef. Clogs the arteries. And the omega 3 in fish is good for the brain.

Save every penny so they can send their kids to piano lessons or buy the dictionary to study English, just to be discriminated at the door of Harvard. Their character seemed pretty strong. It is the color of their skin not strong enough. Shame on you Harvard. As a premiere school, you should set a shining examples for others to follow. Instead, you kowtow to what is commonplace practice & PC. Even California got rid of their affirmative action with Prop 209."

Perhaps most Asians aim higher than UVA.
