Now, if she was speaking poorly of your family -- THEN you have problems.

OP: she wasn't speaking poorly of OUR family, she was lumping it all together. Schools are horrible, people are uncultured, etc.

OP did u read what I wrote? I said IF she was speaking poorly of your family THEN you have problems.

Last weekend DH and I threw a party where we invited our family and friends. One of my friends is also from that country, so I thought they'd hit it off since SIL always seemed very shy around other Americans. Well, my friend called me last night and sounded somewhat upset. She said that throughout their conversation, SIL was calling other Americans derogatory names, bashing U.S. education systems and overall, and kept saying how superior kids from her home country are to American ones. My friend asked if we knew this was going on. We don't speak the language and neither does my brother, so we never know what she's talking about even with her kid. Why would you marry someone whose culture you find so distasteful? Most important - should I even mention anything to my brother?

FWIW, she had her green card for a few years now.

Since I know you appreciate diversity and free speech, I trust you enjoyed such a display of both.

Lol, imagine OP going over to SIL and schooling SIL to love Americans and the US. "I said you better like Americans and this country!!! Or else!!!!"

Or else she married him to stay in this country and bring her family over. I've seen it over and over again. And a lot of those women don't even work in this country.

OP's brother doesn't speak the language either way. Which is a bad idea, btw. Learn the language of your spouse, at least you'll know if she's talking behind your back.

Many foreigners are jealous and resentful because they realize their countries and peoples are dirty, smelly, and inferior.

It's just a normal part of immigrant behavior. Americans living in other countries are also guilty of it.

This. And some Americans also self segregate in expat communities abroad too. What's the point in going over to a foreign country if you only want to be amongst Americans and live like you still live in America?

As an expat living abroad, I have to agree with this.

Have you seen the guys who marry these women? They are not a "prince Charming" types at all. Usually it's the only chance for those American men to have a family with a fairly good looking, young, (often) educated women. It's a trade off, but so is life.

Hello, foreigner! May I suggest you wash your mouth when you get a sec?

I disagree with you. I was an expat for 6 years in the Netherlands. Despite the # of Americans living in Amsterdam, most of our friends from that time are Dutch.

In my extended family, it has taken several years to assimilate. They have such astoundingly high expectations of America, and probably feel quite let down and homesick. I don't think it's that bad to critique the schools.

Everyone's experience is different, I guess. My cousin living in Amsterdam says it's practically impossible to make Dutch friends. Her social circle consists of expats from all over the world, so it's not that she prefers the company of people from her own country.
