CogAt scores letter?

As parent, we can know the score on GBRS? Are we going to have a chance to take a look at all the forms and work samples chosen by teacher selected etc. before it is submitted to the committee?

For what purpose?

The answer is yes-schedule an appt with your AART after the file is submitted to Central screen committee in late February. We did and really useful to know GBRS-all through second grade we had no idea what teachers thought of DC and our child's abilities-knowIng GBRS really helped us gain insight into how our child learns and whether or not AAP was for them-happily the answer was yes and DC is doing well in 3rd.

No. They only let you know the gbrs after the file is submitted.

The decision process is quite cryptic and how the applicants are selected is a secret. The actual weight given to the parent referral and submission is unknown. Weight given to minority status is undefined. Perhaps simple to fill out, but not simple to know what is the best way to package it and what additional testing/materials to include to gain admission.

IMO, If the kids are obviously ready for AAP (98% NNAT AND 95% CoGAT, 14 or better GBRS, nice work sample the teacher can easily identify), or obviously not ready (either NNAT nor CoGAT made the cut, 10 or less GBRS, not much good work sample to choose from), the parent's input will weight minimal on the final decision.
As for as the kids that close to the threshold, if the parents can provide additional material outside the score/GBRS/sample, it might help.

How do we know if the kids is "14 or better GBRS" or "10 or less GBRS" if this is completed by AART?

You won't until
1) the kid is in the pool
2) the screen file been submitted to the committee
3) you make an appointment with the AART teacher to find out
The post is try to help the parents on what to put on the parent referral/questionnaire.

If your precious has to be in AAP no matter what, follow these steps:
1) no matter you got the pool letter or not, start working on the parent referral/parent questionnaire, provide additional material beyond what the teacher normally will provide (but seems they don't care much about sports/music)
2) if got the pool letter, then just submit the parent questionnaire. Otherwise submit both.
3) if found ineligible, get a WISC and appeal
4) still ineligible, start prep the kid, and try again 3rd grade
5) still ineligible, get another WISC and appeal
6) still ineligible, prep more, and try again 4th grade
so on and so on, until the kid in AAP, or until 8th grade

You can only view the file after it has been submitted.

Thanks a lot.

If I got the pool letter, is it still helpful providing additional material?
What kind of material would be helpful? - I have no idea.
camp certipicate? - isn't it something you can get if you paid for? what kind of camp?
award? - what kind could be award is possibly serious for a 2nd grade?

Science fair certificate. Cub scouts, daisy certificate. You get the idea. Get referral letters from coaches, religion teacher, scout leader, music lesson teacher, etc. Good luck!

Yes

The central screening committee is looking for items that would indicate that your student should be in AAP. So submit things that would help strengthen the case that your student should be in AAP. If your student has an area or areas of academic strength, then play to that strength and describe how you have seen this outside of school.

Here is a link to the AAP Identification Procedures Manual:
http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/pdfs/localplan/AttachmentCProceduresManualforFCPS.pdf

You can see every form used in that manual.

Yes if it was an academic camp. No if it was swimming camp, unless your student exhibited leadership qualities.

Did your student win a robotics competition? A math contest? (something like that) If not, then skip adding a copy of an award.

I am a choir director, and quite a few times have been asked to write letters for AAP. I understand that being gifted in music is not necessarily going to qualify a person for AAP, but as a trained and certified teacher, I am often able to comment on a child's learning style, or how they relate to their peers, or music reading skills that are well above peers, etc. With my own child, I had his religion teacher write a letter, particularly because the teacher always told me how DH was so inquisitive and articulate in class. Just a few ideas.

What I will say, is that I realized that in our school, they just grabbed any old work sample. Though he is strong in all areas, my DS was always a wonderful writer. One would think his 2nd grade teacher would have submitted a writing sample...nope, some sloppy science drawing, with very little text.

It won't hurt
Anything you can think of, pick up to 4 work samples (school will do 1 or 2, but parent can do up to 4 additional), and 5 awards/recommendations.
We submitted honor certificate from second-language school, TKD certificate, recommendation letter from TKD teacher, from second-language school teacher, piano teacher.

DD has some nice drawings and 3D artwork. Can we take a photo of them and submit?

Some math contests she won there were no certificate but only medals. We are going to submit photos of DD holding the medals... Does it work?

If your child is white or asian, I would not submit a photo of her.

It was made very clear at the fist AAP expansion district meeting that those were not the demographics the district was trying to grow for AAP. I would not do anything that would bring attention to the ethnicity of your child, unless your child is 1 of the 2 underserved populations that the district is targeting for AAP growth.

Cynical, I know, but honest

anything fit 8x11 page. I would take the medals without the kid though.
