Are people really as mean as they seem on DCUM?

Of course--I'm from the midwest, and can't wait to get the heck out of DC. I don't think that people in DC are that nice, generally.

I agree. Never understood the sense of superiority and entitlement, either.

We're better educated than the people in the average midwestern city.

So? Does that justify your nastiness? No. No, it does not. Planning to teach your kids to be an uppity jerk who looks down on other people? People like you are the reason so many of us are biding our time until we can leave. Good grief.

Better educated and smarter. Snark as an art form. We're just better at it and like to indulge.

Well then you are spiritually bankrupt. Have fun with that. Must feel REALLY good to put that nastiness out in the world, huh?

Yes. I bite people in the line at the grocery store.

NP.

It probably feels almost as good as your smugness feels to you.

I'm not smug. I just can't understand why people delight in being nasty. It's like those commercials where people are nice and one good deed begets another. I think ugliness does the same in reverse and I just don't get it. And I can't understand the spiritual and emotional makeup of a person who willingly engages in such nastiness, but honestly it makes me kind of sad for them. I don't think that makes me smug. I think there is something really sad and broken in a person who is like that day in and day out.

Occasionally indulging in a little bit of online snark serves as the therapy necessary to ensure I am sane and rational in real life. And its cheaper than a shrink

You're on an anonymous internet site telling everyone how much better you are than they are and how sad you feel for them. That's pretty smug.

Not the PP you're talking to, but you can stop congratulating yourself on how "smart" you are. The odds are extremely low that your IQ is higher than mine.

So I hate to break it to you, but a lot of the "artful snark" on here comes across as a 4-year-old telling a poopy joke. No creativity, no wit, no creative use of language - just straight-up immaturity.

And here's the corrolary: many of the PPs who think they're "artfully snarky" are stuck in middle school. Either they never grew out of being Mean Girls, or they are using DCUM's anonymity to get themselves some of that mean girl power they never had in middle school. But if you've read Queen Bees you know the conclusion: the mean girls are driven by insecurity.

Okay. Would you care to defend the people who are ugly all the time? Would you care to defend someone who basically says they are smarter than everyone in the Midwest? So you are just as smug, IMO.

Chocolate is an indulgence. A bacon cheeseburger is an indulgence. An expensive handbag or pair of shoes is an indulgence. Snark is not an indulgence. It is mean girl syndrome.

Ummm... you do realize this is just an anon. message board right?
This is not "real life".
Nothing on here should hurt your feelings - there is little validity.
Consider it like the phone sex lines. The sexy voice does not guarantee the reality of what is on the other end of the line.
Lighten up, join the party and have some fun. That's what I do.

DCUM is what it it is. Roll with it, or move on. If you don't find it amusing or interesting or useful, move on.

The "ugliness" on DCUM is often a well placed smack to the back of the head. If you're too fragile a flower to take it, move on.

+1. Anyone who posts "I'm snarky because I'm smarter and better educated than you" and then accuses others of being smug is actually ... an idiot.

Not the same poster.

I wrote the "smug" comment, but not the better educated comment. I don't actually find DCUM posters better educated or smarter than people in the Midwest.
