Are people really as mean as they seem on DCUM?

x1000. This is so true. The really nasty ones are those who are (or feel that they are) on the outside looking in.

In at what? What is there to see? This doesn't make any sense.

seems to be a mix of mean as well as kind and helpful.

I'm from DC and currently in the midwest now. Same mix of mean and kind here.

I agree. Never understood the sense of superiority and entitlement, either.

We're better educated than the people in the average midwestern city.

In at the power circles in DC.

I think people in DC really are as mean as they seem on this site. In real life, they just hide it better under a veneer of superficial niceties (sometimes).

Reading DCUM is like watching a cable news channel; anything more than an hour a week will give you a distorted view of reality. Much better to get out there in the real world where most people are kind (even the lawyers!).

I think it's just that people will tell you what they really think rather than hiding it under a veneer of what's socially acceptable. So at least from me, you'll get a mix of helpful responses along with a good dose of snark when I think a question is stupid. Along with my favorite icon, the eye roll. (which I probably employ all too frequently IRL, too--I have a low tolerance for stupid).

I think people are mean on this forum because it is completely anonymous. These are not people that would be mean to your face (they are probably still mean/snarky people, but never to your face!).

That said, maybe you should try asking your question in a different way? Can you provide links to some of the questions where you've been attacked and we can let you know if it has to do with wording of your question or just mean people?

Yes, OP, Washington has more than its fair share of people who think they have a monopoly on what's right, and this PP is a fine example.
They may (or may not) "tolerate" your views in person because essentially they are cowards. But online and behind the veil of anonymity, they will not hesitate to flame your "stupidity," by which PPs like this one mean "not agreeing with me," complete with eyerolls.

Yes, I am THAT mean.

Oddly enough, I have tons of friends!

We appear nicer in person.

Of course--I'm from the midwest, and can't wait to get the heck out of DC. I don't think that people in DC are that nice, generally.

So? Does that justify your nastiness? No. No, it does not. Planning to teach your kids to be an uppity jerk who looks down on other people? People like you are the reason so many of us are biding our time until we can leave. Good grief.
