Are people really as mean as they seem on DCUM?

snark+smug=abused=predator. No thanks.

Okay. Would you care to defend the people who are ugly all the time? Would you care to defend someone who basically says they are smarter than everyone in the Midwest? So you are just as smug, IMO.

+1. Anyone who posts "I'm snarky because I'm smarter and better educated than you" and then accuses others of being smug is actually ... an idiot.

You mean Alabama with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (themselves no garden spots) on both ends?

Hey 15:09: who said anything about "not being able to take it"? We're not personally hurt. Instead we're tired of the lame pre-teen insults and we're rolling our eyes at what passes for snark. We wish you'd shut up aleady, that's all.

To our midwestern friends, there's no need to leave DCUM as 15:09 suggests. Instead just step over her posts as if they're dog poop in the middle of the sidewalk.

Of course--I'm from the midwest, and can't wait to get the heck out of DC. I don't think that people in DC are that nice, generally.

I agree. Never understood the sense of superiority and entitlement, either.

We're better educated than the people in the average midwestern city.

So? Does that justify your nastiness? No. No, it does not. Planning to teach your kids to be an uppity jerk who looks down on other people? People like you are the reason so many of us are biding our time until we can leave. Good grief.

Better educated and smarter. Snark as an art form. We're just better at it and like to indulge.

Well then you are spiritually bankrupt. Have fun with that. Must feel REALLY good to put that nastiness out in the world, huh?

NP.

It probably feels almost as good as your smugness feels to you.

I'm not smug. I just can't understand why people delight in being nasty. It's like those commercials where people are nice and one good deed begets another. I think ugliness does the same in reverse and I just don't get it. And I can't understand the spiritual and emotional makeup of a person who willingly engages in such nastiness, but honestly it makes me kind of sad for them. I don't think that makes me smug. I think there is something really sad and broken in a person who is like that day in and day out.

You're on an anonymous internet site telling everyone how much better you are than they are and how sad you feel for them. That's pretty smug.

Okay. Would you care to defend the people who are ugly all the time? Would you care to defend someone who basically says they are smarter than everyone in the Midwest? So you are just as smug, IMO.

Ummm... you do realize this is just an anon. message board right?
This is not "real life".
Nothing on here should hurt your feelings - there is little validity.
Consider it like the phone sex lines. The sexy voice does not guarantee the reality of what is on the other end of the line.
Lighten up, join the party and have some fun. That's what I do.

You are assuming my feelings are hurt. I don't care what you think. But you've certainly answered OP's question which is that yes, most people in DC are just as nasty as they seem on here. They are just really good at faking it in real life. I'm guessing you'd never say that Midwesterners are uneducated hicks out loud at a social function.

Not the PP you're talking to, but you can stop congratulating yourself on how "smart" you are. The odds are extremely low that your IQ is higher than mine.

So I hate to break it to you, but a lot of the "artful snark" on here comes across as a 4-year-old telling a poopy joke. No creativity, no wit, no creative use of language - just straight-up immaturity.

And here's the corrolary: many of the PPs who think they're "artfully snarky" are stuck in middle school. Either they never grew out of being Mean Girls, or they are using DCUM's anonymity to get themselves some of that mean girl power they never had in middle school. But if you've read Queen Bees you know the conclusion: the mean girls are driven by insecurity.

At least I know it's not spelled "corrolary." Good grief.

Thanks for proving that being smart doesn't make you nice.

I'm from DC and currently in the midwest now. Same mix of mean and kind here.

Wait - you're suggesting that people in the midwest are sometimes mean? But . . . but . . . but . . . I thought it was an article of faith that people in the midwest (the south, too.) are universally kind, loving folk who never utter a harsh word, even anonymously! Say it ain't so, Joe! You'd better be careful, PP, they'll come after you now (kindly and respectfully, of course).

Someone told me years ago when I move dhere, "DC is a city full of frustrated ex-class Presidents" and once I heard that it allllllllllll made sense.

Yup, this. And agree with the other posters that the anonymous forum encourages some people to lash out and be nasty.

Now I'm going to see Tracy Flick every time I imagine a DCUM poster.

Pick Flick!

I never said everyone in the Midwest is nice. But sitting on your perch of superiority and looking down your overeducated noses at them isn't nice either, no matter how you look at it. Nice straw man, though.

The circular reasoning, it burns.

And thank you, Republicans, for making "overeducated" into an insult.

Another problem with the anonymity is that it encourages trolling. Sometimes you think you're engaging with a sincere person, and then they reveal their trollishness. Like this poster, who is probably a lonely middle-aged guy in a filthy apartment.

What are you talking about? I am as liberal as they come. But I also know tons of people who keep going to school just for the sake of doing it or b/c they are lacking direction. It doesn't make you any better than anyone else, or any more decent or honest or worthy of respect than the person who checks you out at the supermarket or picks up your trash or fixes your dryer or whatever.
