If You Grew up in MD, Would you ever move to VA?

Now PG County is a disaster and Montgomery County has taxed the growth away. There is much more future in Tysons Corner (yes, I know it has its own challenges), Reston and Arlington than anywhere else in the DC metro area. Downtown DC will always be #1, but the limits on development are severe.

Not all of PG county is a disaster. Come on.

I grew up in VA and have zero interest in living in MD. I do have a lot of friends from MD though. They think we're all stuck up and we think they're all delinquents. But we all do love each other.

N.VA native---DC or VA...but I'd never live in MD.

I grew up in VA (not N VA) and we live in MD. Never thought about it - I went pretty far away for college and then moved to DC after college, never thinking I'd ever want the burbs. But in early 30s when we wanted to start a family we ended up buying a house and MD made more since given our commutes. DH works in MD and I commute in via the redline, which we are very close to. We love it, we have already expanded our house and don't plan to move in the next 15 or so years. I really haven't spent much time in N VA so not really opposed to it, but nothing draws me in either.

Born and bred NOVA here - I have two friends who moved to MD and still can't believe it. The schools are so much more confusing and spotty in MoCo and HoCo, I just don't get it.

it also seems that over time, certain ethnic and religious groups have tended to segregate in certain areas. PG has become predominantly african american. more jews live in Montgomery County than NoVA. Hispanics are in both I guess in equal numbers, and I think NoVa has more asians.

So where you live might be based on a desire to be part of your community for comfort reasons.

I'm a transplant and have only lived in DC (so far), but before I moved here I asked two friends who grew up in the area why their families has chosen Maryland vs. Virginia, and vice versa. (One friend grew up in Potomac; the other in Vienna; both had parents that worked in DC.)

I asked them both separately, and they both gave the EXACT same answer:

"So, do you know why your parents chose to settle in (MD/VA) rather than (VA/MD)?"

" [Blink. Confused look.] .... Why would you want to live in (MD/VA)?????"

It reminded me of a sort of Aldous Huxley 1984 sort of outlook.

Funny! I grew up in Potomac, and my dad (and his parents) grew up in NW DC. I remember his parents (who both also grew up in DC- born in the early 1900s) saying, "if you have to move out of the city, at least go to MD and not VA". I never understood that! They were probably remembering VA from the 1920s or something- without metros, more bridges, etc, making it difficult to get into the city. So it's probably passed down through generations, like racism and religion (joke).

Does that mean you can't live in PG county if you aren't black? Or MoCo if your not Jewish? I think not.
There are cities in PG county that I wouldn't live in but the same goes for every county.

You would seriously avoid the entire state because of one county?

Wow....that PG County comment was not very kind.

If your list was limited exclusively to Pepco, I'd say right on. Otherwise...yeah, bizarre. But then again, if you're that big a moron, we don't want you here.

I absolutely love where I live. My neighbors and I will share a glass of wine while sitting outside watching the play. We can count on each other in an emergency and there is always a shoulder to cry on. We live in a safe place and no one has ever stolen an unchained bicycle off of our front porch.
My children go to a fantastic school with tons of parental involvement. They also take great classes that are offered by our community center and there are so many playgrounds that there is a playground crawl map.

We also live a short distance from DC and a park and ride metro station not far from us. We live in a walkable community where the grocery sells beer and wine and no one taxes us on our cars that we already own outright.

I really have no complaints about where I live in PG county MD.
