Or the other way around?
just curious....I know there are a lot of people who would never dream of crossing the river - and I'm one of them! For me, it's mostly familiarity, and the other side just feels so different. |
| From Maryland and still live here - no. |
| Actually I grew up in MD, moved to Arlington for 10 years and have now been back to MD for 6. MD is so much nicer. I would never go back to VA. |
|
I think familiarity is a big issue. I've only lived in the DC area for 13 years (all of them in VA) and I probably wouldn't move to MD. I like our area and it's comfortable.
And I agree that the other side of the river has a totally different feel to it. Not sure why that is. |

PPs, I agree. Curious why you think MD is nicer?
For me, the streets make more sense, are cleaner as well. |
| No way. DS lived in VA. Neither of us liked the neighborhoods we could afford, and almost all our social lives were in MD anyway. |

DH born and raised in PG County. Went to UMD. Moved to VA when he was 23 and has been here since. I'm not from here originally, but I'm going on 20 years in VA as well.

| I grew up in Silver Spring, and have lived in DC and Falls Church, VA. I would move back to Falls Church and I would love to live in some of the close in metro accessible neighborhoods, but I wouldn't be interested in living outside the beltway on the VA side. |
| Yep, I grew up in MD, went to college in VA, and then stayed after college. I would move back to MD in a heartbeat, but DH is a consultant, and most of his projects seem to be in VA. We're out in Chantilly, and most of my friends are more conservative than I am. I do long for the days when I could talk politics with like-minded friends, but oh well. Northern VA's not too bad otherwise, but I wouldn't live further south. |
The conservatism is more a factor of living far out than it is a NoVA thing. Close-in Virginia definitely isn't conservative and we probably wouldn't live here if it was. |
| I grew up in MD, lived for a couple of years in both DC and VA, and have been back in MD for 20 years. They all have their plusses and minuses but I like where I am. |
| There's no way this thread can turn ugly. Thanks, OP. |
I tried
Trying to keep it light! |
| Lived in MD for 35 years before moving to Alexandria. Alexandria was nice enough, but it was too close to a more conservative culture than I felt comfortable with. Going out to a mall in Springfield was just different enough that I didn't really care for it. I saw someone wearing a handgun at least once a week, for example. Too bizarre for me. And politics were much more conservative. Even NoVa's liberals were conservative by Maryland standards. I'm back in Maryland now. But I miss how diverse Alexandria itself was, in a big way. Maryland is diverse, but it's more in pockets. All things considered, though, neither is horrible for sure. |
| I grew up in Maryland and now live in Vienna and would never consider moving back to MD. Maryland has gone so down hill - higher taxes, more crime, less attractive public universities, less quality of life. Virginia is much better. |
