| Grew up in MD, live in MD now, would never in a hundred million years move to VA. No particular reason, I just don't like it. I most especially don't like driving anywhere in NoVa, and while traffic in MD is awful too, at least it's an awful I know. |
Apparently you didn't spend much time in the the People's Republic of Arlington, lol. |
| We live in VA and I work in MD. So many of my co-workers are belligerently anti-VA. We are transplants here and never realized how vehemently some people feel about this! I think familiarity it a big part of it. Because I drive a lot both places, I know my way around pretty well, but if you never drive in VA (or vice versa), of course it feels strange. We considered moving to MD to be closer to my work, but DCs are in school in FCPS and loving their school and their friends and we hate to uproot them. |
I guess it depends on where in MD you are from. I'm from Baltimore County originally and there is no way on earth I'd move back there. Quite content in Arlington. Maybe some other parts of MD are just as nice as what I've found in VA but unfortunately I haven't been exposed to them

I grew up briefly in MoCo and mostly in Upper NW. I live in Fairfax Co now. I'd never move back to Montgomery, mainly because the jobs are out here and I am not fighting the traffic every day. But if that weren't a factor I'd definitely live in Chevy Chase or Bethesda if we could afford it. Same goes for just about any part of the District, assuming I could get DH on board.
But I am content in our part of Virginia and the schools are good, the town is a real town, the public universities are fantastic, and the commonwealth has generally been good to me the 15 years I've lived here. |
I'm sure you have nothing against Virginians. In fact, I bet some of your best friends are from Virginia. |
| After reading the 'Bragging' and 'Lululemon' threads, there is no way in hell I'm ever moving to Bethesda. Of course, I could never afford it but I'll pretend it's more by choice. Hoping that not everybody living there is really that scary. Someone please reassure me! |
| Yes, I did. Arlington is closer to downtown and while I like montgomery county, it does feel more removed from dc unless you are living in chevy chase. Virginias great public universities are another plus. |

I think most of the 'burbs of DC are fairly interchangable. I realize there are some more conservative pockets and more liberal pockets, as well as parts that are more racially diverse than others. But we honestly started our househunt in 2003 in Gaithersburg and then wound up buying in Reston. Now, I got less in Reston than I could have in Gaithersburg, but our primary concern was commute. I had been jobhunting and wound up getting a new job in Arlington - no WAY was I doing that commute on the Metro!
We are quite happy in Reston, which has a fairly liberal tilt. I don't like that I have to put up with VA politics whenever a state race comes up, but their weirdness doesn't factor into my every day often. I actually grew up in MD, but in the northeastern corner. OMG, I would NEVER go back to that backward place! It has nothing in common with the MD burbs of DC. You might as well be in Kentucky. |
| My husband and I both grew up in MD - him in Howard County, me in PG County. Got married and moved to VA to be closer to his job 13 years ago and I don't think we'd ever go back to MD. We love it here. Clearly, we are in the minority, though. |
| Grew up in VA (tidewater), been in NOVA for awhile now, would never ever consider moving to MD. I feel about MD how most Marylanders feel about VA. It just seems so backwards, the traffic and road layout seems shitty, the terrain and some of the people remind me of the crappier parts of West Virginia. |

Grew up in Bethesda, left for college/grad school, came back a decade later when DH got a job on the 270 corridor. We initially moved to DC, not being sure where I would get a job, but once we knew I'd be downtown (and not in NoVa) we bought in Bethesda.
My parents are still here and I enjoy taking DS to the same playgrounds I went to. DS will probably go to my old school. On weekends we pick up Vace's, just like my dad and I did. Yes, I'm a boring homebody who enjoys familiarity
That being said, our #1 priority for housing is location, especially commute convenience. Right now NoVa would be awful for DH's commute, but if one day NoVa were more convenient than Bethesda, we are certainly open to it. |
| Lived in MD for 25 years. Reluctantly moved to VA. Wouldn't move back to MD for anything. |
| when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, Montgomery County was where the action was and PG was home of the Univ of Maryland and had some quiet rural charm. Now PG County is a disaster and Montgomery County has taxed the growth away. There is much more future in Tysons Corner (yes, I know it has its own challenges), Reston and Arlington than anywhere else in the DC metro area. Downtown DC will always be #1, but the limits on development are severe. |
Can't. It really is that bad. My Asian friend moved away because all the other moms at the park thought she was a nanny. They saw how good she was with the kids in her care (half asian, half white and look more like dad) and tried to steal her away. Oh, and when she wasn't with the kids, people thought she was a maid. Nope. Bethesda isn't for me. or my Asian family. That said. Not sure I would move to VA either. It always seems like there are huge amounts of road work being done and it's much more congested. I am sure that's why there's more road work, but it doesn't change the fact that my GPS can't keep up with all the new roads.
