There’s a parking lot with a ledge that overhangs Chesapeake St. there’s often kids up there smoking pot (we are neighborhood walkers with kids at JR) and police responded yesterday when a gun discharged. Kids were on the baseball field and a local preschool had its kids out a block away. MPD needs to be in the community more and patrolling these hot spots.

No one is going to lock up kids for smoking a little weed. It's probably beneficial since it would help them destress.

Those "destressing" were the ones who shot this kid.

Principal Brown just emailed the school community with the news. But didn’t mention gun violence or violence at all.

I don't get JR emails. Can you post?

The news reported that he was from Southwest DC. If JR is truly as over enrolled as reported, then why does DCPS keep admitting out of boundary kids through the lottery?

JR has out of boundary kids who came in through feeders. As long as that’s the rule, families will get in. What actually matters here is that a kid was shot dead.

Dear Jackson-Reed High School Parents and Families,

It is with a heavy heart that I share news of the recent death of one of our students, Brady Flowers. As a senior, Brady was a cherished member of the Jackson-Reed community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Brady was a bright student who approached his future with determination and purpose. After high school, he expressed a strong interest in serving his community through military service or law enforcement. He loved football and took pride in being part of a team, demonstrating commitment to both the game and his teammates. His warm personality and natural charisma allowed him to form meaningful relationships with classmates and staff. He cared greatly about his family and others in his life. He will be remembered for the kindness and positive energy he brought to the Jackson-Reed community.

This loss will surely raise many emotions, concerns, and questions from across the Jackson-Reed community, and we want to share how we will support everyone during this time. Tomorrow, Monday, May 11, the DC Public Schools (DCPS) Crisis Response Team will be deployed to our school. This team is made up of mental health professionals trained to help with the needs of students, staff, and families during difficult times such as these.

Jackson-Reed’s dedicated wellness team, comprising two school psychologists, six social workers, ten school counselors, and a network of community-based organizations, will also be available to provide a safe space to talk or share their feelings.

If you need resources to help guide conversations with your student at home, please visit dcpsmentalhealth.org and refer to Getting Through Grief and Loss: A Guide for Students. The well-being of our students is important, and we are here for our families during this time. Please reach out if we can connect your student with support.

On behalf of the Jackson-Reed community, I extend my deepest condolences to Brady’s family, siblings, and loved ones. If you have any questions, please call the school office at (202) 282-0120 or email me at sah.brown@k12.dc.gov.

Sincerely,

Sah Brown

Principal, Jackson-Reed High School

He came in through Deal feeder.
Not sure how he had "rights" to enroll in Deal - assume he lotteried in to one of the feeder elementaries.

In-bounds JR parent here — I don’t see why it’s relevant at all whether he was or wasn’t in bounds or how he got to the school. Agree with PP that what matters is the tragic outcome here.

Unbelievable. The kid might as well have died of the flu.

DCPS refusing to acknowledge the elephant in the room, once again, is a big part of the problem.

Jackson Reed school newspaper article mentions that Brady planned to go into the military or law enforcement. He seemed well liked and was a successful athlete.

That is actually false, the pre-school was closed for the afternoon for teacher's appreciation day. But they would typically be out at that time. A lot of kids of all ages are in that area constantly though.
